You are correct on everything:
I understand that IT IS a business , but Sting's conviction are always hard to decipher, on one hand as he always said he likes to surprise people
And in fact, it's a surprise to see Sting in a project like this one...
So as you say it's a business , especially a financial one Remember that there is a large number of people around him, around the record company, etc...that gets money through his work.
I am an idealist Like me, you are a fan of his usual work, we get something for good, but there is also something that we don't like...where is the problem if he does something that we don't like? You know that when sometime my friends say something bad about Sting, for them is just like saying something bad TO ME...well, who cares if they say something bad about him...it's not ME...I don't fucking care...people may like something or not, that's pretty normal; I never liked 'Well' Be Together', so what? I loved the rest of '...Nothing Like The Sun'...
Anyway, as you can see, Sting makes people talk a lot, he makes fans talk a lot...the big problem is when people do not talk anymore about what an artist does...I'm sure the 'big crowd' will like the album, it can be a good Christmas present (I guess they will release a new version with a dvd or something like that for Christmas), and the tour will do well. By the way, I saw the 8-minute video of the rehearsals today on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHaa3nbkgmo&feature=player_embedded#! and I have to admit that I liked what I hear and saw, despite my initial lack of consideration for this album; maybe I won't like the album but it will be cool to listen to it live... I understand that IT IS a business , but Sting's conviction are always hard to decipher, on one hand as he always said he likes to surprise people ( Ok for the Dowland and in a minor way to the Winter one) but this project like this seems a bit easy. So as you say it's a business , especially a financial one , and I am always surprised to see that people like Sting ( and many others , he's not the one ) are always willing to make more and more money. It's surely human to want more, who am I to judge, I 'll do the same perhaps if I was at his place. But I am an idealist .... Dylan has released some of his best stuff the last 5-10 years, and he's older than Moses :) Yes, it's probably business, so let's hopefully enjoy what there is for now. I can understand your point of view, but I guess there's a lot more behind this projects, that means a record company deal (probably he did a deal with Deutsche Grammophone for more records than we might expect), I guess there is also a request from the record company to release something this year...the Winter album itself was a request from the record company to release something for Christmas (they asked him to do a Christmas album that he turned into a 'Winter' album) ... at the end of the day it's about art, but it's all about business as well. An 'orchestra' album is something that many artists of his status do release, and it's something that SELLS to the main public...usually they're not for fans like us...and he knows it for sure. At this stage of the music market, releases like these can help sales...it's easy to sell a 'greatest hits' revisited...easier than trying to sell a new record, mainly if you don't have big ideas in mind; it also helps in keeping the name alive, waiting for something new to come out. I know these are all his songs , he is the composer of them all but they are so linked with The Police. For a man who does not love nostalgia ...I respect the man's musical positions , I can understand the John Dowland and the Winter albums , I even like them both compared to his last studios attempts even though there were some good songs , but the musical direction was so bizarre. I don' t care if Sting's records do not not rock anymore, even though the music is good. But I still love his voice and still wait for soething better. So in the meantime you can still listen to Animal Logic, Oysterhead and to the Maestro compositions ( I m not fair, am I ? !!)
