Chris Botti at the El Rey

My wife and I got to the El Rey last night about 7:30pm only to find a fairly long line waiting to get in the theater. Doors were supposed to open at 8pm... the show at 9pm. Around 7:45 I noticed Kipper walking from the parking lot across the street... at first I wasn't sure it was him ... I guess I was expecting that he would be dropped at the door... or enter behind the stage. He did go in early... Anyway around 8:30 they started letting people in. The place was filled with tables even in the areas that are supposed to be a dance floor. At first I was beginning to think we were going to be stuck at the back the whole night since the place was already crowded. We did manage to push ourselves to the front right of the stage... and to our surprise.. there sits at a table none other than the man himself... Sting! So we staked our place standing for the show about 5 feet away from Sting. I've met Sting several times... this is the first time i've asked him for a handshake. He seemed to be in a very cheery mood... I think one of the people sitting with him was his publicist... an older lady with reddish hair. I've seen her before but don't know her name. She was very friendly. Anyway after shaking his hand and a few words I made it back to the standing area next to his table. Just for the record someone brought in some sushi for 2-3 people at Sting's table... including Sting. Anyway Chris took the stage around 9:30pm... the show was being filmed for a Direct TV broadcast and possibly for a PBS special. Chris was incredible.... he was joined mid-way through the set by Shawn Colvin for 2 songs (they played the Sting song twice - so she was on for 3 songs actually) and later Sting joined for a Sinatra song and Moon Over Bourban St. Jason Rebello was also in the audience (sitting close to Sting) and he joined Chris on several songs. After the show everyone was walking around the audience... however Sting took somewhat of a safe position in the side stage area. I spoke to Kipper a bit... a really nice guy! It was around 12am and most people had left when they starting asking everyone without a wristband to leave. Sting, Chris and Kipper were still there. I think there was some gathering in the balcony area... but it seems that it would be very small. As we left Shawn Colvin was walking acorss the street to her car as well. We spoke to her a bit on our way across... she is also a super nice person. Many thanks to Maggie for suggesting I buy tickets last week! OK, so it's midnight on a Monday, I'm halfway through a bottle of Merlot, my mood is in a rapid downward spiral, and I need to vent. Let me take you through my evening, and I know; you will feel my pain. Background: You may remember my entry last year entitled, "Close Encounters of the Miles Kind." At the time, I was an actress/waitress in a celebrity-friendly Los Angeles restaurant. While still paying my S.A.G. dues, I have since put the acting career on the backburner, and have also become manager of said restaurant. I get to work @ 3 pm, and the first call I take is from an executive at Columbia Records, looking to book a private room for the evening. We work out the details, and I go about my business of opening the restaurant. On the 6 disk CD player, I put in a few Rat-Pack CD's (it's an Italian joint) and to slow the evening down, I end with All This Time followed by Chris Botti's Night Sessions. We get busy downstairs, the party of 20 gets going upstairs, and at about 8pm (the party started at 6:00) a guy comes in asking for "the Chris Botti/Shawn Colvin party." I immediately go on high alert. Not associating the two, I come to the conclusion that he's in the wrong place, and I direct him to an even more celebrity studded restaurant 2 blocks down (meanwhile, freaking out that Chris Botti, Shawn Colvin, and quite possibly Sting - in town for the VH1 awards last night - are at my friend's restaurant 2 blocks away.) He comes back in about 5 minutes later with a piece of paper with our address on it, saying that he thinks this is definitely the place. We figure out that he's with Columbia Records, and as I'm escorting him up the stairs - I've got to really scan that room and look at EVERY FACE IN THERE - I'm trying to be cool, telling him that I'm a Chris Botti fan, and in fact have the CD in my rotation this evening. He is non-reactive. The evening continues...I determine that the party is simply a post-production celebration or something. They all file out early, at about 8:30, and the guy who booked it- Jason- seeks me out to thank me. I repeat to him (nonchalantly) that I'm a Chris Botti fan and have the CD in the player this evening. He says, "Yeah, we're going to his show tonight at the El Ray Theatre tonight. It should be cool, Shawn Colvin and Sting are going to do some songs with him. Thanks for everything." Now, the El Ray theatre is 10 blocks from my work. And its capacity is about six hundred. Not six thousand, but six HUNDRED. And it is general admission. And I am at work, and STUCK. And I won't be done until 11pm or so. HOW DID I MISS THIS?!? The evening ends like this. I finish up about 11:15, and to make myself sick, I cruise by the 'ole El Ray. Sure enough, the billboard reads, "Chris Botti and Friends." People are just now filing out. A familiar looking, black SUV with tinted windows sits running right in front, in the tow-away lane, and I am reduced to circling the damned place in my dodge neon like an asshole. After about 4 circles, I go home defeated, and log on to the El Ray webpage, POSITIVE that he will play a second night. But no, he will be in another state tomorrow. Whatever...my glass is dry. Tuscany: Any differences between webcast and TV special???

Hi folks, while recently recording the TV special on videotape I asked myself whether the Tuscany webcast was different or not. I know that after the first song "Fragile" the minute of silence has been replaced (on the TV version) by a small portion of applause but does anyone (who has seen the webcast) know if there are further differences (diff. tracks etc.)? VH1 Awards

Well, I somehow missed Sting on the VH1 Awards. I thought it was scheduled for the fifth. I am kind of disappointed that there wasn't a "reminder" of the upcoming perfomance on the list. (Maybe it was on some of the posts that I am not getting?) I have heard plenty of commentary on Mary J. Blige, but still don't know what song they sang. Anyone feel like filling me in? Thanks. KIM

Did anybody see him on Larry King Live?? I missed it by an hour. Supposedly he was supposed to perform 'Fragile' as a tribute to the victims of Sept. 11th. By the way, for you AOL users, Sting is "Artist of the Day." The live version of 'Fragile' from Tuscany can be viewed using AOL media player. It opens automatically. Sting, Elton, and strained small talk

Did anyone catch Elton's "live by request" concert on A&E tonight? Apparently he was taking calls from listeners who would then request songs for him to perform. I happened to turn the TV to A&E just as Elton took a call from our man Sting. It was pretty funny, although Elton felt it necessary to revive that old tantric sex wheeze: he joked that all the songs on Sting's new album took eight hours to perform. Anyhoo, after saying that he always wanted to hear Elton sing "Roxanne", Sting requested "Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word". Not one of my favorites, but then again, "Roxanne" has always been one of my least liked Police songs. Hope that doesn't get me kicked off the list. ;) jENNIFER P.S. I also found it funny that Sting and Elton addressed each other by queeny nicknames like "darling". Who are they, Patsy and Edina all of a sudden?
