Did anyone catch Stevie Wonders speech last night for Sting and Sting's acceptance on the Billboard Music Awards show. It was on US TV last night and I missed part of it - the Sting part - but someone told me about it. I did catch Sting on the show "Access" last night with an interview by the Access report - focused a lot on his book and new album as well of course. Man Sting is all over the place.

Speaking of Christmas songs, I recently heard a Sting song on the radio that I never heard before. I don't know what the title of the song is, but Sting kept repeating a chorus refrain of "on Christmas day, on Christmas day." It sounded more catchy than anything off of Sacred Love, and it sounded more like a classic Police/Sting melody. It talks about the birth and death of Christ (probably one of the few songs ever to feature the word "embalming.") His voice goes from very low/deep to very high. Not a traditional Xmas song. I think the best songs on the CD are the Coldplay tune and Seal's song. Jewel's is almost unlistenable. Didn't she used to be a yodeler? Because that's what she does through the whole song. More vibrato than Stevie Nicks has ever had, if you can believe that. Stuff: Has ANYONE heard "Whenever" on the radio?? I had high hopes for this song (it's not one of my favorites, but I thought it had serious hit potential.) I know it's only been a few weeks since it was released, but I wonder if it's doing anything? If it crashes and burns, what will the third (if any) single be? Remember that After the Rain was the third BND single, didn't do much, and then there wasn't anything released after that, as I recall. Billboards: I couldn't watch last night as I had a late meeting and didn't get home until 10:30 p.m. How was it? I read his speech on S.com and thought it was great. How was the performance? I got a copy of that Best Buy CD with the Sting Christmas song (the one in the "peppermint" tin). I'm not a member of the BB promotion club which earned the CD, but when I checked out with some other items I just plunked the CD on top of the DVDs I was buying. Tracks Magazine w/Sting

Hey there, Looks like the much anticipated first issue w/Sting on the cover has hit the stands. I've seen it at Barnes and Noble and Eckerds here in Texas, I know it's been sighted in Florida as well. I've flipped through the mag and it looks like it's right up my alley. For other 30 somethings, you may want to check it out with or without Sting! I just ordered my subscription (6 issues) for 19.95 at Amazon.com and that includes a $15 GC for a future Amazon.com purchase. Can't beat that. I know if you order it at the Tracks website, you get a free CD w/songs selected by someone (maybe Johnny Cash, but I can't remember!). Not a bad deal either. Happy Holidays! Michelle in TX

Greetings fellow Sting and Police fans, I've been contacted by a fellow fan who is writing a book on Sting, and who is writing it from the perspective of Sting's fans. He is collecting writings from fans to include in the book. If you have any questions about it, please contact him directly at stingstories(a)hotmail.com . My work has previously been widely published in countries around the world, in film festivals, magazines, journals, galleries, theaters, and on television and the web. I am writing to you as a fellow Sting fan, to invite your participation in an exciting, groundbreaking and original project. I am seeking to assemble a collection of essays for publishing on the web, as a series of journals, or (most appealing to me, and my primary ambition) as a book. These essays will be composed by Sting fans like yourself, and will be meditations/stories/anecdotes/recollections on what StingÂs music has meant to you. Sting recently appeared on ÂThe Oprah Winfrey ShowÂ with his wife Trudie. Trudie was discussing how she used to resent Sting for always working and touring and being largely absent from her life, until she Â realized that the world NEEDS his music.Â And that is just it. Most pop stars have fans who love their music, but their lives wouldnÂt be different in the absence of that music. For a great many people, the connection to StingÂs songs goes well past being a Âfan,Â in the traditional sense of that word. His music really MEANS something. We really do NEED it, in the way that we need food, sleep, love, air to breathe. On more than one occasion, StingÂs music has assisted in changing my life Â his songs once lifted me out of a seemingly bottomless depression, and the ÂBrand New DayÂ album came along at a time that I was contemplating a major change in the direction of my personal and professional lives, and was without question largely responsible for the way that I made those decisions, and the reason that I am blissfully happy today as a result of the decisions I made. The project will include a couple of essays by myself documenting these specific experiences, as well as a more general one about the space StingÂs music occupies in my life, and a more academic/scholarly piece about the connection of a fan to an artist, and the phenomenon of having your life so thoroughly touched by someone you may never meet. Beyond that, I look to you for help. I know that there are thousands of people whoÂve been touched by StingÂs songs, and I want your stories. So if you have a tale to tell, please send it to me. If youÂve met Sting or seen one of his shows and that experience changed you in some way, then please send me your story. I am most interested in connections people have made with the music. I think it's only fair that both Warren Zevon and George Harrison win Grammys for their recent releases. As for Jeff Lynne, it was his sound and production that made George Harrison's big comeback in 1987 possible, as well as the two Traveling Wilburys albums. I think he may even have had something to do with Roy Orbison's Mystery Girl and Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever. Cried like a wuss the first few times of listening to that, but that's probably because my dad was the same age as George, looked a little like him, and also died too young, from cancer. Saying that, I think the album sounds too much of Geoff Lynne.. In fact, to me, he's the 'kipper' influence. You've only got to hear a record produced by him and you can tell he produced it by that ELO sound.... So really, if George does win anything, it'll be a sympathy vote rather than for work he's done, because don't forget, most of the tracks were just demo's, that they had to scrub together and polish up to make onto the record.... So we'll never know just how much of George is in those tracks... Hence they all sound like Geoff Lynne to me. from VOA NEWS.com The 2003 Billboard Music Awards will be handed out on December 10 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Winners are determined by the performance of artists and songs on Billboard's weekly charts, which are based on sales and radio airplay. Rapper 50 Cent leads the contenders with six nominations, including Album of the Year and Artist of the Year for Get Rich or Die Tryin'. R. Kelly and Beyonce each earned five nods and the Dixie Chicks and newcomer Sean Paul received four. Performers on the show will include Clay Aiken, Pink, Beyonce, Shania Twain, Evanescence, No Doubt, Foo Fighters, R. Kelly and Sting, who will receive this year's Century Award, Billboard's highest honor for creative achievement. The ceremony will air live on FOX-TV.
