well, i may be ostracized by many of the (remaining) members of this list, but i have to say that orbital may well have been knocked down to #2 on Brandon's Top 10 Best Live Electronic Acts That He's Actually Seen list. On friday i had the pleasure of going to the chicago stop of the Warp USA Mini-Tour, featuring the likes of richard devine, jamie lidell, mark bell, dj ease, chris clark, prefuse 73, and luke vibert, amongst others. and while most of them were all entertaining in their own right, jamie lidell completely blew me away. as far as sheer talent, stage presence, and overall live show, mr. lidell was, in my humble opinion, way beyond any other act i've ever seen. he started out with your standard wierd IDM random noise business, but it quickly escalated into him beatboxing (IDM beats!), singing (his voice resembles jamiroquoi's), and rapping, while still doing music. he would sing something, sample it, and then loop it, only to sing something else on top of that and sample it, creating wierd harmonies for himself to sing over. then he'd go in and manipulate the samples of himself singing or beatboxing, IDM-ing the hell out of them. all the while he had a continuous stream of lunatic expressions on his face, or wierd smiles signalling that he was pleased with himself. it's really hard for me to put into words how his show went, but i guess i could just say that i was in constant awe for the whole hour. unbelievable. if you get a chance to see him perform, i highly recommend it. *Brandon's Top 10 Best Live Electronic Acts That He's Actually Seen * 1) Jamie Lidell 2) Orbital 3) Gusgus 4) Richard Devine 5) Otto Von Schirach 6) Kraftwerk 7) Ming & FS (ok, they're djs, but they put on a damn good show, and they play guitar and bass during their set) 8) Plaid 9) Autechre 10) Slicker Honorable mentions: the crystal method, lofidelity allstars, phonecia, russle haswell, chris clark, prefuse 73, gosub, ultradyne love, brandon invergo ===== brandon invergo barrel o'monkeys http://www.barrelomonkeys.com02.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thanks for the Jamie Lidell review. Too bad I missed the LA date of the Warp USA Mini-Tour by one day! I didn't even know it was going on. How many of those artists played live vs dj-ing? Oh yeah how is Gus Gus? I see they are touring. I am not too familiar with their music at all but I see you listed them right under Orbital. I think I've heard Purple which I liked a lot and Ladyshave which I didn't like at first but it grew on me after a few listens. Shaun
damn, that sucks that you missed that! it was a great show. i think the only people that dj-ed were chris clark (spinning, as far as i can tell, only his own tracks; i'm not sure though), dj ease of nightmares on wax, and mark bell (lfo). i didn't catch luke vibert though, so i'm not sure what he was doing. everyone else was playing live. as for gusgus, it took me a little while to get in to them, mostly because i hadn't heard much music like them before. i love all of there albums that are out so far, but the first two, polydistortion and this is normal, have a bit more poppy of a feel to them due the the vocals and such. the third album "vs. t-world" is straight instrumental and is really good melodic stuff. the reason i listed them so highly on my live listing is that they had such a great stage presence. when i saw them they had 8 people in the band (down from the 9 of their first two albums; they lost a singer). two were singing, and the other six were behind all the machinery. their usual 4min songs were transformed into huge 15min versions. it was fantastic. unfortunately, there were a bunch of troubles in the band a couple years ago, and they lost most of their members. now they only have 4, only two of which are original members i think. all the singers are different too. apparently they have a new album coming out in august, which is what they're touring for, but all i've heard of it is the live streaming of it that i'm getting off their site (www.gusgus.com). it seems alright, if it'd stop cutting out all the damn time ;). but what i'm trying to get at is that their live show may be entirely different from when i saw them a couple years ago. buy polydistortion and this is normal my two bits love, ===== brandon invergo barrel o'monkeys http://www.barrelomonkeys.com02.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
