Well for me personally pretty much all of the music of FSOL is timeless which kinda makes some of the past postings moot in my book. The Isness??? oi....that's imo one of the best albums of all time! I'm surely trapped in the 90s....and the 80s, 70s, 60s too! I listen to plenty of new music but didn't mention it here as i was thinking that more orb-like music is what was being discussed. New electronica, i follow all of the simon posford stuff as well as benji and ott on that label. System 7 just put a new album out that's superb. As for non-electronica.... Medeski Martin and Wood is putting out 3 albums in the next year....i really can't say enough about them if you can stand a degree of jazz in your music. Anyhoo going back to FSOL there's a lot brewing over there! Tons of older stuff is being released and there's also new work on the horizon! As someone mentioned there's peppermint tree and the lost environments 1+2 releases and my understanding is that a full new FSOL album is in the works! Funny though....now that it's been said, i realize i surely listen to more older music than anything. The last "new album" i purchased was a live Zappa gig released by the family trust lol!! But think about it....how often does a gem really come out? If you are listening to *tons* of new music right now i would guess you are listening to a lot of rubbish (personally speaking - no offense here!) in that mix. I'm selective and in my heart all of the music i own is timeless. So trashing that music aside for the sake of feeling the need to hear new acts doesn't really do it for me. I don't feel "trapped" in any decade. I feel like it's 2008 and we have a good 42 years worth of music to sift through to find what connects with each of us deep inside. We should be so lucky! ;)

You'll never, ever know if you don't look. If you are listening to

That's the case no matter what decade one is in - but, of course, if you *aren't* investigating yourself, you are arguing from silence. Sad thing when the discussion is music, n'est ce pas? I'm
selective and in my heart all of the music i own is timeless. So trashing that music aside for the sake of feeling the need to hear new acts doesn't really do it for me.
I didn't trash anything (except Rush) - but you'd still be listening to something even older if at some point you didn't take the initiative to see what's out there. Again - some of need to dive for the aorta. jeff
You should also check out Tunng (available on bleep.com) a folk/electronic band. They're not ambient, but are really fun to listen to. Ken Erxleben wrote:

THAT's the spirit! As I mentioned before, some on this list might get into the Ultimae label, things on Sending Orbs, Highpoint Lowlife (try Marcia Blaine's* School for Girls' "Halfway out of the Woods" - very eclectic/changes a zillion times before it's over...a snippet-sample won't do), and lots of the FAX label still does that 90s-era chillout vibe. What was it I mentioned before - ? Sunconscious Worlds and Dark Side of the Moog XI (latest releases) for starters. Blamstrain might do it for you as well. jeff * google up MB's website and check the 'audio' section. I've heard none of the files there, but there's quite a few. NOW back to the work I keep avoiding (I get very creative about NOT doing things I hate to do!)
A few things on this label are decent as well. YMMV, of course. http://www.dataobscura.com/ And has anyone here looked into the zillions of FREE netlabels out there? They're free, but there ARE some really good things here. Of course, one has to try, dig, etc. Free Blamstrain: http://www.blamstrain.com/ This is pretty slick for dubby-tech. http://deepgoa.wordpress.com/2008/01/30/va-cismarine-cism_5/ http://www.thinner.cc/pages/home.php enough here to keep you busy for months! http://www.rob-hall.co.uk/ (skam's resident DJ) Try all of the Intelligent Toys comps here: http://www.sutemos.net/en/player Sleepy Town Manufacture (at Sutemos) is decent. http://www.seedsound.com/netlabel/ http://www.percussionlab.com/Sets/OchreShow.shtml http://www.stadtgruenlabel.net/

One more for the category above which I just happened to remember: http://www.aleph-zero.info/releases.html Look for some samples from one of the recent compilations for an idea of what the label is about. I'm just shooting for some slightly off-road 'chillout' style with this suggestion. jeff

and a decent live act to boot. Saw them last year at the Empty Bottle & gained a crush on the vocalist out of it. Caught them at the Mercury Lounge in NYC (first state-side appearance if I remember right) myself. Had to miss their second gig though, which was a bummer. Know what you mean, Becky is definitely hot! Gavin Miller wrote:

Yo, I'll be there! And don't forget about Prince! Also, any other Orbies that are going this weekend, I have a Queen size bed available, perfect for 2 people, at the Embassy Suites in La Quinta. Not far from the Coachella grounds, and would be willing to share for 4 days (Thurs-Mon) if they can pay for the cost of one of the nights. Email me privately if anyone is interested.
