hmm.. all this talk about music & pay.. i dont think i'd pay for mp3's or "burn your own cdr's" - i pay for cd's - i do have 1500+ cds - and i give my own music away for free - sure mp3's make the market thougher - but the quality better. whats the big deal with mp3's anyway? its better than radio - you get to choose what to hear - but the quality is not better. and i go BUY the good albums anyway..(usually at great difficulty since i dont yet have a creditcard to buy over the web - and the music i like isnt generally available at your 'top of the pops' musicprovider) sorry - but you cant make me pay for a cd with music i haven't heard before - mp3's give me that choice. i guess thats why the big record companies are scared ;) - 'what? we have to provide quality? why cant we just sell tits&ass and a single hit using massive advertising?' _________________________________________________________________ Surf the Web without missing calls! I have no interest in mp3's, and *especially* no interest in 'tricky' sorts of music buying schemes (subscriptions, crippleware 'virtual' images, etc.). Although I don't have anything near the sort of collections y'all have, I do enjoy having the real thing (having the original FFWD cd is heartwarming in some strange, frightening way). as a sensitive artist shrinking violet type who essentially just fell off the turnip truck, so to speak, I would like to express my mortification at all the 'bollocking', etc. going on- I don't understand any of it, firstly, and secondly, it *frightens me*~ waaaahhhhhhhh I was curious as to 'who did what' on certain *ORB* recordings.... the most brilliant elements of the music I can think of, of the top of my head: 1) Buckwheat & grits- chord progression, tempo, and the 'edit'/ambient treatment segment somewhere in the middle of the piece 2) track 5 on Pomme fritz- (just this piece in general- who's concept was this based on upon!?) 3) Pomme fritz track 1- the relaxed, icy, synth melody- the first *ORB* i had ever heard, astonishly original, mind completely blown, ice water in my veins 4) assassin live 93- who came up with this alternative instrumentation/ arrangement? 5) Montaigne d'or- steel guitar multitracking/layering and chord progression 6)oxbow lakes- the incredible 'through the looking glass' synth & inversions/ harmonies 7)sentinel- (I'm assuming thrash did almost all of this- synth washes, and relentless asskicking rhythm) ....I could go on for hours like this... Is it safe to say LX does samples and FX, and KW did the synth? What is it about *ORB* with Kris that makes it so much more mythic, spiritual? Orblivion (contrary to much of what I've heard here) does *not* suck, though! 2-5 are brilliant.... but it sounds like Thomas fehlmann's music, as if he's doing almost everything. which is fine- TF is totally awesome- but, well, you know.... I think it would be cool to hear KW collaborate with marumari and curd duca (although I can't imagine their personalities exactly fitting); oh, and LX... old *ORB* with KW was much more beautiful and meaningful elliott ===== **********compassionat.net**********

indeed. funny you should mention. i found marumari recently and have thought there are several very distinct moments of Orb influence, though in general Marumari is not like the Orb and more quickly put in a box with boards of canada.... and even that's a whole nother thing... welcome to kris weston. if i recall, not the first subscription to the list? there was a 1993/94 appearance, or if not then someone posted an email address to which i wrote and received a reply from an individual whose writing style i've not encountered again.... until now.

My front door backs on to the chicken place (KFC) Which stands for kentucky fried cunts And it does smell strangely of onion rings and bubble gum Well indigo would know shes been there I suppose.. Sorry bout the smell m but hey! You get to work in a great Dysfunctional studio - By the way im just looking into making records.. If you made 2000 records with full colour artwork it would cost you roughly 2400 quid .. minus the 8 percent that mcps takes in uk and minus manufacturing and the percentage the distributor takes you are left with about 1700 squid and thats if you don't give away any promo copies or hire any company for promotion... If you give away say 200 promo copies (£3.25 each) and pay the promotion company say 3 squid a copy to promote it you are left with about five hundred quid.. take away the time it takes you to make the record... oops Basically you are left with one can of beans and half a fag.. Thats counting on the fact that you sell all 2000 immediately otherwise you have to wait till the end of each month for your next cheque from the distributor... So the only way you can make money is by licensing records or putting them on comps .. OR... internet sales ...that seems realistically in the first steps of a label the only way you can make something ... still looking into it .. let us know what you think.. I think maybe I could do the internet sales meself or something to start with - unless theres some wicked cheap internet distributor out there.. most of the distributors don't wanna deal with internet apparently.. maybe that's wrong it doesn't make sense...i ve searched on google for em but cant seem to find a decent one.. I suppose eventually every company would want to be in charge of their distribution - but this has to develop slowly with us .. seeing as we aint putting large amounts of investment in to avoid the problem that badorb got into... o yeah we avent got large amounts of investment.. doh.. that's another reason we're not putting large amounts of investment ... kris

yeah its a bastard... i think thats how the bigger companies cream lots tho cos they do everything.... but they're ripoff merchants anyhow, must find you that article on The Register which alleges that big name record companies are falsifying their figures so they only pay their artists 40% of the pittance they're owed..... m~ -- iriXx www.iriXx.org copyleft: creativity, technology and freedom? info@copyleftmedia.org.uk www.copyleftmedia.org.uk _ ( ) ascii ribbon against html email X / \ cat /dev/sda1 > /dev/dsp *** stopping make sense ***

The venue is an old pub on Brixton hill Its open really late and quite a haunt for the crusties and generally drug crazed drop outs of the area... its an ok place tho.. quite big .. Don't forget though, once you've set it up you will get a load of people bitching that you didn't:- post it out on time sent the wrong stuff/size charged them too much postage send it all in one order deal with their query in a timely and courteous manner even when you emailed them saying just "I haven't got my stuff" And so on. Can't win either way. I fink doing it on your own i.e. without the backing of a big [read: crap & profit driven] record company is a commendable move sire. re: Skunk. I can highly recommend making space cakes wiv 'em if you're trying to give up smoking [which I am]. Just don't have too many if you've got to talk to people.

Skunk or cigs? Cigs is the only answer. The only reason [other than I'm hopelessly addicted to nicotine] that I'm still smoking cigs is cos I can't leave the weed alone. If it's money your after [and everyone is], not got any old Orb shit hanging around that you can flog on ebay to muppets like me? Talkin' of mp3s does anyone have the Relics or Virtual Sex compilations on buzz on CD or mp3? I gots em on Vinyl but can't listen to em down 'ere cos I don't have a rekid player. Same goes for Derrick May/Innovator LP on R&S.

Apparently if you can work out how to get the grease out of their food it's quite palatable. (Sort of like if you can figure out how to get the sand out of mud you can drink it.)

From working in the web design business i can say with some degree of authority that just a website by itself won't do; you have to make sure people are aware of it in order to get them there in the first place. That many clients i had assumed that the web could provide all the advertising they needed and they wouldn't have to lift a finger. I did end up leaving that job partly because the clients were by and large complete geese. Micropayments and more realistically subscriptions might be good though. :) seeyash, Kwook
