Howdy folks! Just returned from my whirlwind railtrip around Europe; Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Vienna, Prague, and the festival in Saalberg Germany. 3 weeks of action packed blashemy! Caught a cool drum and bass night in a cave in the basement of a club in Paris, also went out to Dub Club monday night at Flex in Vienna. Most enjoyable indeed. As for the orb performance at sonnemondsterne, I have a mixed opinion of the set. It's my 2nd time seeing them live, and I was not too impressed. I really enjoyed the first part of the set where they opened up with the really dubby tracks like PD and Outlands. Of course the crowd made noise for LFC cause its probably all they knew. The only track from B&T I recognized was LUCA, which sounded pretty good. I was disapointed not to hear more knew material. Also, the band took a break after 40 - 50 minutes and LX played a few records, quite shittily. I mean it's ok for him to pull that shit at a smaller gig, but there were 30,000 people there waiting to hear the chemical bros, and if you are pissed at having to open for them, then don't take the gig. But to see a 37 yearold LX up there smoking his doobie bobbing to that old punk rock track w/ lyrics "I'm old, and I don't care" or something of that sort really gave the impression that he's kind of giving up caring about making cutting edge music. And really, afaik Witchman is doing all of the live performance with simon on bass when they play and LX is just mixing in levels and channels, which doesn't require all too much musical talent. What made things worse, was that after LX's shitty attempt at djing, when Witchman returned to bail his ass out, he was even having difficulties matching the beats on the last track. This didn't provide for a good finish to the show. Overall the show was ok, but not what I expected after travelling 2500kms+ from Norway. For as much as I anticipated to see my favorite band perform for the second time, I left feeling incredibly depressed by the impression they gave the crowd. I actually felt embarrased that I had told the Austrians I camped with that The Orb were my favorite band. I was hoping that they would put on a phenominal performance and show up the chem bros, but I guess LX just didn't have the balls to even attempt such a feat. LX, if you're reading this, WTF gives?! Have some class man! After this experience, and the past 2 ablums, I think I will change my view on who I idolize in the music industry. Spend more of my time and money on my own efforts. Sorry for the long post, but it had to be said. Peace n' burnin trees, MikeD P.S. - The rest of the festival was wicked fun, T. Raumschmere and band were incredible live! German punk techno! Great venue on the river too!
