My exposure to the Orb was pretty basic... In 1992, I heard something by them on the CBC radio (Brave New Waves show I think, late at night) when I was half asleep, and I really enjoyed it, so I marked their name down.. For the life of me I can't remember the track, but it was off the brand-new U.F.Orb album... During the next trip I took to the city (as I lived in the boonies), I stopped by a good record shop and asked the employee who worked there what they were like. Not being familiar with the ambient techno scene, he directed me to Kraftwerk, and shuffled to another corner of the store and promptly began ignoring everyone. I remember distinctly that he was a wanker, as Kraftwerk sounded nothing like what I heard on the radio. Oh well, so much for record stores having cool employees... Anyhow, I bought the U.F.Orb cassette - yes, had no CD player at the time, didn't look like I was getting one anytime soon either. I listened to it, and didn't like it! Couldn't figure out why they put all of those freaky sounds in it, like the "I want bloooood!" sample. After repeated listens, I grew to like it. But one day, I found myself thinking of the music, getting Blue Room stuck in my head like a sunnovabith, and sure enough, I was hooked, and it's all been just orby since then. The next big Orb purchase for me was Live 93. Again, I initially didn't like it, but I quickly grew to absolutely love it. Man, it has to be the best live album of any type of music that I own. What a piece of work. Love the Benny Hinn 'morphine drip' sample too - I guess I can't get enough of crazy faith healer samples played over bongo drums, heh! Strangely enough, I didn't get to hear a copy of Adventures until considerably later, like around 1998. A Cool Orb moment? Hmmm... Having Andy write me an email back in '96 was cool. Surprised the hell outta me. All I did was ask "do any of the band members read the list?" and sure enough, they do. Another multitude of cool moments is watching TV or listening to music and accidently hearing a sample used in an Orb track that I recognize immediately. Happened to me the other night when I was watching Death Race 2000 and realized that the zooming samples used in Blue Room came from those crazy space buggies. Or watching "Sleeper" with Rags the dog. Also it was cool finally meeting LX when he played at the club literally across the road from where I live. Quite a nice set, and I really enjoyed it. Plus LX signed a CD cover for me too. I hope he comes back sometime... And on a completely non-topic post, I have to mention that I saw the movie Donnie Darko a few days ago, and I fiercely recommend it to the Orb listees. Kinda fucked up, but has great dark humour, and has some very interesting takes on time travel and 6 ft rabbits. Good smoking material, ahem. Cheers, Rob
