Macs have viruses too. Don't be naïve not this one far as I know. But seriously I didn't mean to bash pc's, I was just stating that when I took the plunge to buy a computer I should have ponied up and bought the mac I wanted, rather than the pc I was willing to pay for. And of course no system is completely safe from attacks. My naive and non computer savvy brain became frustrated with not knowing what to do causing me to "lash" out on the orblist aginst windows based systems. I actually like my pc but still suffer from mac envy. I never meant to start a debate but thanks to all for the education. Hey, it's healthy to discuss the issue. I think an ideal situation for you would be to have a couple macs and PCs. If I had the money I'd certainly have a mac kicking in my office, but being in the industry I am, that's not quite possible right now. I think this is an interesting topic - I've already learned a boatload from the mac security site that someone posted (I don't have my already-downloaded mail on this machine so I can't give credit where credit is due), and it's quite interesting to see who on the list is a Mac user. It's funny to match personalities with computers! :D I have a Mac Quicksilver 867MHz with 1.5G ram and 500G worth of hard drives, most of which are 256-quality mp3s or m4as. =D (I ripped my entire cd collection recently, but still need to do the vinyl - any good ideas as to how to do that with maximum quality and minimum noise?) Anyway, all you PC users - GOOD NEWS!! Apple is porting iTunes to the Windoze platform, so you all can take advantage of the iTunes Music Store (and PAY for your music) hahaha ;) Kris, I know you mentioned owning a Mac - do you use those all the time, or what? What did the Orb use for software? Just curious. Rachel, do you use Macs for your design work? Cheers, all!! -Brian

How is iTunes anyway? How is the selection? I'm still partial to the album concept. Rarely a musician I like only produces one worthy track on a CD, so I'm usually quite fine with buying the whole thing. I trust my encoding skills a bit more, too. I've yet to find good quality encoding online. It's usually CBR or too low a bitrate. I'd pay 10 bucks for a bin/cue of CDDA information. That's pure audio, ---- Mark Schieldrop Reporter, The Narragansett Times mark@schieldrop.net

I like the Apple Music Store. I've spent perhaps $200. I found out that some (all?) of the AAC files are encoded from master tapes. To my ears they are quite nice. As we know there is a cult of loudness and bright shiny sparkliness among modern studio engineers (or is it their pointy-haired bosses) which means that a lot of older albums are not nice on CD. Compared to this then, the limitations of the compressed apple format (Dobly I guess I should call it) are no worse. I bought one album that sounded a bit rough, but perhaps it always was. The one thing I don't like is I can't send the files to other mp3 devices, such as my SliMP3 (www.slimdevices.com). I had to turn off the "one-click shopping" feature though, after I accidentally bought an Ace of Bass album. Chris -- http://homepage.mac.com/mihalis68/PhotoAlbum6.html

actually, each label does their own encoding (or at least, now they do... initially, Apple probably did it for them). i know Six Degrees uses the master cd for their recordings.

This is true. Apple did their own recording until they determined the quality standards to which they wanted to adhere; from that, they've permitted each label to do its own encoding, provided the label meets those standards. Apple DOES check the quality before permitting the album to go on the iTunes Music Store. -Brian

Mark, It's funny you should say that you usually enjoy an entire CD. I do, too - for MOST artists. Because most popular music is such rubbish, though, I do appreciate the track-by-track option to select the best music from an album, rather than buying the whole thing. "Pay for what you like" is a great marketing strategy. The selection on the iTunes Store leaves a little to be desired. They did spread their net wide, and more is being added all the time. I think they'll do really well after a lot more is added. Since this has been nothing less than extremely profitable for Apple, you can bet that there will be a substantial increase in the number of included music at about the same time they release iTunes for Windows. Apple'e encoding requirements are good, but are not 256! If you want the highest quality encoding, you're best off doing it yourself. However, that aside, they have set a new bar for the quality of encoding; Apple's offerings are FAR better-sounding than a 128 MP3. The Apple store DOES have ease-of-use in their favor. One-click shopping is fantastic, if you're careful. We ALL KNOW that you didn't "accidentally" buy that Ace of Bass, Chris... You're a fan, admit it!!! =D According to the mac rumors sites, the European market should be able to tap the iTunes Store by the beginning of next year. Unfortunately with all the stupid rules and regulations set up regarding trade and money and such, Apple is slow to offer the European market access to iTunes Store; however, you should see a European version of it soon. I hope this helps, guys!! -Brian

I admit I was browsing the album. I thought I would try and remind myself which track I had gotten stuck in my head years ago (perhaps "All that she wants"). Instead I bought the album. I actually like a few tracks (thinking I would at least see what I blew $10 on), but the rest are fairly poor. Chris -- http://homepage.mac.com/mihalis68/PhotoAlbum6.html
