It was '91, Swedish Eagle and Freddie Snakeskin had left KROQ and were starting a new format at 103.1 on the dial. Their new home was MARS-FM, LA's first electronic dance music station. Snakeskin at the afternoon drive slot. Driving home one afternoon he played "Perpetual Dawn." I love reggae, so made a mental note when the sister sang about a sound system called the Orb. That bass was phat! Made a trip over to Moby Disc on Beach Blvd. to try and find the song. Found the single disc album "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" and on first listen it became my favorite album. A short time later I found the "Little Fluffy Clouds" CD single at Tower in Anaheim. A couple of years later at one of our Friday sessions my friend Thomas and I were discussing music and the Orb. One of us had played an Orb track during our sets and we were talking about what we collected. Thomas stated you'd have to be crazy to collect the Orb, because they have so much material plus remixes and it would be impossible to track them all down. Well of course I took up the challenge and have been tracking down Orb material ever since. Saw the Orb for the first time in 1995 at the Hollywood American Legion Hall. Would have attended 1993's Park Plaza gig if I had known about it. Anyway I've tried to catch them every time since. Organic '96, The Mayan, Coachella (power turned off) and Area: One. Also managed to see LX DJ four times. Always an irie experience after the show. Drove him to his hotel after one of the shows at the Knitting Factory. After all these years their still better than most of the other music out there. Looking forward to the new album and hopefully a tour! Fountain Valley Lounge Lizard
