Back in November of 1992 if was stabbed in my neck while I was sleeping by my estranged wife who I was in the process of divorcing. I lost nearly six pints of blood in less than 20 minutes. While I was recuperating at UCLA Medical Center, I heard "Little Fluffy Clouds" on MARS FM Los Angeles. I was pretty much in and out of consciousness all that day and on heavy doses of morphine. Somehow that sound really impacted me and made me feel much more at ease. I set the name "The Orb" to memory and went out and bought "Adventures Beyond..." the very day I got out of the hospital at a cool little indy CD store on Pico across from Westside Pavilion in West Los Angeles. It quickly became my favorite CD of all time (and actually still is). I quickly introduced this album to all of my friends. We all had a lot of great "High Times" with "Adventures..." and some nice herb. Shortly thereafter I found the "Patterns & Textures" video on import NTSC VHS at the same store and the new release of "UFOrb" with bonus "Blue Room" CD single included. I was planning on dosing on acid for the first time the following weekend and saved the video and new album for just that occasion (also renting The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine"). I have to say it was an amazing evening, even life altering in my way of looking at things. I saw "The Orb" live at an old hotel in the Wilshire district of Los Angeles (I think it was late 1993). It is still one of the most memorable live performances of my life. Since then I have bought every CD, import CD singles, etc. that I could find along with some nice bootlegs when visiting London and Amsterdam 4 years ago. I have met and spoke to Alex several times after his DJ gigs. The last one at whatever club Vinyl in L.A. is now called several months back where we shared my pipe of chronic with Alex and his mates and hung out for about an hour. He is a great guy and has really influenced my life in a lot of ways. Sorry this was so long and hopefully didn't bore to death anybody who read the whole thing. John Wintemute

WARNING ***OFF TOPIC*** John Bennett & anyone interested in this story (everyone else feel free to delete) I got married in November of 1991 to a girl I had been dating off and on for five years. We were together regularly for about a year then she got a job as a flight attendant for Delta airlines and had to work out of their Atlanta, Georgia USA hub-terminal. She would fly to visit me in the Los Angeles, California USA area about once a month and we got engaged in 1990. We got married 11/02/1991 & flew to Maui & Kauai Hawaii for 15 days. I always thought we got along great, had exact same taste in music, movies, etc. and really thought I was in love. The first night in Maui shortly after we checked into our hotel, first she told me she was disappointed with the hotel room (which was $500 night and I was paying $250 night with her airline employee discount) and later admitted that she was upset about her diamond ring which had a .94 carat center diamond (almost flawless) with 1.5 carats of diamond baguettes on the band and which I paid over $10,000 for. She said she expected at least a full carat for the main diamond. About an hour later she enthusiastically told me that the whole time I had known her she had been putting on an act to be the type of person she thought I would want to marry and now that we were married she could be herself. I can't begin to explain what I felt like & what was going through my mind. I just figured there had to be something in her that was real that I loved so I thought I would try and make things work out. Things just went downhill from there. I soon found out she was pathologically jealous and would freak out if I even talked to like an 80 year old lady. She would fly out of town for 3-days of work at a time and come back convinced that I couldn't go that long without sex and grill me about who I had been fucking while she was gone. One time she even tried to light our bed on fire. I could go into tons of stuff but this e-mail would be like 5,000 lines long. Eventually (seven months after we were married) I decided if I wasn't going to kill myself I had to get out of this situation so I told her we were getting separated. I had an office in a condominium in the Westwood area of Los Angeles which I moved into sleeping on the floor, etc. I let her stay in my house (I say "my" because I bought it six years before we were married) temporarily. I told her if she was willing to seek therapy I would be there to help her with it and if things started to change we could start trying to work to get back together. Of course she said there was no reason for her to seek treatment and would not even consider it so I finally told her we should proceed with a divorce then. Of course she freaked out over this and attacked me ripping my shirt to shreds. I cut off communication with her for a while. Finally in the end of October she called and said she agreed we wouldn't be able to work things out and wanted to meet to go over divorce proceedings. She said we would go to dinner and a movie to try and continue things in a civilized manner. She then mentioned that she had to fly out of LAX at 6:00am the next morning and since my office I was still sleeping in was only about 15-20 minutes from the airport asked if she could sleep over and leave in the morning. Stupidly I said o.k. Everything went very nice at dinner and the movie (Malcolm X) although she said "the violence in the film bothered her". We went to sleep and at 4:30 a.m. I woke up with a steak knife buried in the right side of my neck. Not really realizing what was happening yet I sat up in reaction to the pain as she pulled the knife out. She then tried to stab me in my face but I reacted and caught the knife in my right hand. The blade was serrated and the points actually cut all the way into the bone in two of my fingers but at least I was able to hold onto it and wrestle it away from her. Fortunately I did not hit her or anything because then it would have turned out that she was defending herself or some crap like that. I wrestled my way past her out into the hallway. She locked herself in the condo. I went to the door across the hallway and a lady answered saying 911 was already called and she closed the door. I started getting very dizzy and sat on the floor and knocked on their door again and her husband showed up and pulled me into their apartment (I later realized I was standing there in my under shorts covered in blood from head to toe and holding the knife...kind of makes since why the woman didn't let me in at first). The man took the knife from me and sat me down and pressed a towel onto my neck. I pulled it away and asked how bad it was and his wife vomited on the floor. Kind of answered my question. I asked to use their phone to call my parents while I waited for the ambulance. I was convinced I would die any minute by then and just wanted to hear my mother or father's voice. My father answered and I told him I had been injured and that an ambulance was on the way and to come by the condo across the hall from mine to find out where the ambulance took me (they live in Malibu, about 30-40 minutes from my office). The ambulance showed up and took me to UCLA straight into surgery. They operated for over an hour before they would pause to give me any anesthesia. I was praying to either pass out or die because the pain was unbelievable. They had to cut through some muscles in my neck to get to the two arteries that were severed. Finally I got some local anesthesia but that was it because my vital signs were to dangerously low. I found out the knife went in between 2-3 inches missing my carotid artery by less than 2 cm. It severed two major arteries and the tip went between the back of my throat and my spinal cord. After surgery I had to go through test for the next six hours because air bubbles kept showing up from inside when they were operating on me. They never did discover where the air was coming in from. I never felt safe when I was asleep after that and had constant nightmares for months. My ex-wife was tried for attempted pre-meditated murder which was plea-bargained down to two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and attempt to do grievous bodily harm. She was sentenced for three years and served 18 months for good behavior. Of course the "Justice" system does not care about getting help for the cause of the problem. To bad she wasn't caught with a tab of acid on her or something because then she would have gotten 20 years (no she didn't do drugs). Makes a lot of sense, huh? Anyway, The Orb discovered at the perfect time helped me through one of the hardest times in my life.
