I found that "Aliens Ate My Cadillac" album to be really sad. After the utter genius of Flat Earth is was such a shameless attempt at a hit album.

Isn'it it a Buick? Hmm, I've got that one to and it has some nice 'ironic' tracks: Hot Sauce, Airhead... I think Dolby wanted to go the funny-Zappa-way with that album, having danceable tracks but with a 'sarcastic' text that are claiming the opposite. But you're right it not his best album (and IMO The Flat Earth is not his best too).
