i agree - using p2p's like soulseek have made me buy albums from artists i'd never know if it wasnt for free download. it has on the other hand also made me NOT buy albums from artists i'd usually support - due to lack of quality. i like FFWD too - i've had it for years on vinyl - but having no recordplayer i haven't begun to listen to it until i downloaded the mp3's. i share my own music as often as possible - and that (and a live gig) has gotten my band a record deal + plus some gig offers.

Giving away the music for free and then relying on people liking it and giving money
thrash >> have a look at lemon jelly. their new album has been on the net for months ( uploaded by them too, which is always a nice touch ) . on release their album has crashed in at no 1 in the indee charts and 20 in the majors, so i thinks they have done well by handing out the musics on mp3. at the end of the day if someone's gonna download it they gonna buy it if they likes it that much , for the art work etc , the better sounding WAV cd version and of course for the love of the artist. the best idea is to give it for free and sell the proper versions from your own site :0)
everyone benefits that way :)
lookin forwards to hearing some of them chatlines widda beat :)

I'v been working n a method which would allow ppl to DL an image(cdda)(protected) of tracks / albums which can then be played only on the PC where th DL went. however this still dosent stop direct audio copying. unless, the image is crippled. (allows ppl to listen not reproduce) all getting complex. bill HU5 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 So called "Digital Rights Management", which is the "industry" term for this, is CRAP and I encourage everyone on this list to think about it before they buy in to any of this stuff. Mandatory "DRM" on new computers is being seriously considered my Microsoft and computer manufacturers, much of it is already built into Windows XP and Windows Media Player. Mandatory "DRM" will kill the US computer industry, plain and simple. It will force *broken* hardware and software, and encourage institutionalized (legislative) monopoly. You have the right to USE your *own property* -- that CD you just bought -- unrestricted by draconian software restrictions. Sorry to rant but at least think about the practical rammifications of such a system -- moral opinion and politics aside -- in the end, its making the user's life more complicated and restricts their ability to listen to the music and to turn their friends on to the music.
