LX in boston dj set review [kinda long and meandering]
well, i've been too lazy to write up my experience at the LX dj show (feb 1, 02) in boston..i hadn't seen anyone else write anything about it either (not surprising, since the crowd was like 60 people, max...) anyway, i was extremely impressed with his set, i'd only seen him dj one or two times before, but this was by far his most technically adept that i've seen (funny some of the LA or SF people said he sucked technically..heh, maybe he wasn't very high at this show). so to start with, the doors opened at 6 at axis, which is pretty lame because they wanted to get us outta there before their normal "club night" which starts at 10pm and goes till 2am. at about 6:10 we got there and there were about 4 others there, we proceeded to sit on dirty steps for 70 minutes or so before LX strolled in and walked past the bar, etc..thankfully he saved us from the god-awful generic house they'd been playing off a cd somewhere, and threw on a cd with some really spacey ambient shit..cool stuff (he also mixed with similar stuff throughout the night, some of the transitions he'd start up the supa ambient stuff before switching over records, which may sound like a way of copping out of good mixing, but it went over quite well). so LX talked with 3 women at the bar and then disappeared backstage for 10 or 15 minutes, came back to the stage armed with a can of guiness and set about blowing us away.. as others have said, and if you've seen him before, he plays every genre of music..such a nice change from the "2 hours of bumpin' hardhouse/trance/etc with no segues and no tempo changes" that is all too common in my club-going experiences these days. i wish i wrote this sooner, because i'd have more details..as others have mentioned, he played a few badorb tracks, but only 3 or so i'd guess. he appeared to be in a very good mood, even though for the majority of the show, there were only 30-40 people (more people trickled in near the end, i assume they were there for the "regular" club night). at one point, he disappeared backstage while a song was playing and came back out with 3 cans of guiness for the extremely rowdy and into-the-music mexican guys standing in front of the stage (the dancefloor was otherwise pretty barren for most of the evening). they followed up by having various scantily-clad bar-maids bring drinks to him.. at one point he threw on some 80's softrock/synthpop sorta thing, i forget what the name was, but he proudly displayed the record cover while he danced around and sang the lyrics (i don't think it was the remix of whatever others on the list are talking about, it sounded like a straight-up original)..very funny and enjoyable, and took some by surprise..either right before that, or after it, he played a track i'd be willing to bet is some new orb goodness..if not, i'd like to know what it is..had some orb-esque dubby bass stuf going on and some other slight electronic wankery we've come to expect from the orb.. so yes, as i said, i was amazed by the technical skills..he'd mix stuff together that sounded great, and also he was constantly putting stuff on and then barely switching it back and forth for a noisy beat or whatnot, i didn't exactly expect this sorta stuff from him, but it was much appreciated. he also played the missy elliot feat. nelly furtado "get ur freak on" remix, which he seemed to enjoy quite a lot..which kinda raised a few eyebrows in the audience, but was funny in an ironic sorta way (although given the respect i see electronic producers and everyone give that song, i don't think he meant it very ironically). as i said, he went on around 7:30 and played till a few minutes after 10, so it was quite a long set.. i wish that his sets were more crowded, as i'm not sure places will rush to book him again if no one comes to the shows (although to be fair, the weather that evening was pretty crappy, and also how many people want to go see a dj at 6pm?) ahh well..i was more than pleased by this excellent performance, hopefully some new orb goodness will head our way soon.. matt. ------------------------------------------------------------ Valentine's Day is here, send a romantic gift to your friend or loved one NOW! http://www.smartshop.com/cgi-bin/main.cgi?ssa=4099&a=giftguide
