You Renigade FTP naysayers are shitheads. You know, despite many efforts over the years, and many different computers, I have yet to get onto this ftp site; I was even one of the many people who received personal answers to the question 'what is passive mode' and 'what is port 21'. It just wasn't in the cards for me to get onto this site; totally no hard feelings for RMStringer, that MY computer doesn't fit HIS ftp....and you know what, I found most of the stuff I heard he had on soulseek...and anything I am missing I am sure will turn up someday. Aside from that though, I am totally amazed that this guy kept that much ORB/KLF material up for so long, for free, no questions asked. Even though I never managed to get access to this site, I still say thanks for keeping it, as I am sure as people downloaded things of the site and posted on soulseek, all that ORB goodness managed to make it to my hardrive, one way or the other. What about all us people on the list who never attempted once to get on to the FTP, yet had to constantly hear about it for YEARS. The problem with RMS Stringer was not his Ftp (although some tracks on this were still commercially available - and that's a problem to me), but his constant replies over the years :

What people don't understand saying they got in once and never again, is that their ISP might block port 21 or their router is not set up properly or some BS like that. For the few that "never got in" I tried to help them and figure it out. Most got in and were able to use it for many years. 5 years it has been up in one form or another. I just think that it is time for a break. I might get it back up and running after we find out where we are gonna be living. Don't know. It takes a lot of time, not to mention hardware, to keep files there and trouble shooting for people that ask can you help me figure out port 21 and what is passive mode for the 1400th time. I don't understand the spiteful remarks concerning RMStringer and his FTP. Did he really insult you with telling the list members that he had this or that stuff on his server, albeit a bit too frequently :))? Did he ever refuse to give the log/pass details to anyone afterwards? Did he make you visit his FTP against your will? Did he set up the FTP to steal your credit card numbers? Did he let in only the people who gave him something in return? Was it his regular job to organize files according to everyone's desire? Did anyone of you set up an FTP with high bandwidth and loads of rare Orb stuff (excuse me if you did - I cannot recall if I saw any other FTP mentioned on this list for years) for everyone to enjoy it?
For me, RMStringer's FTP worked fine. Sometimes I could not log in, sometimes the speed was too slow - so what? RMStringer didn't owe me anything to meet my demands. Yes, there's soulseek for people with fat bandwidth, but for poor sods like me who live in Russian outlands with a crappy dial-up connection, his FTP was the only source of rare Orb and KLF stuff that I would have never found anywhere else.
So, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Mr. RMStringer for the job he's been doing for years, for us, for nothing. It would be a great pity if the server goes down forever.

You Renigade FTP naysayers are shitheads. You know, despite many efforts over the years, and many different computers, I have yet to get onto this ftp site; I was even one of the many people who received personal answers to the question 'what is passive mode' and 'what is port 21'. It just wasn't in the cards for me to get onto this site; totally no hard feelings for RMStringer, that MY computer doesn't fit HIS ftp....and you know what, I found most of the stuff I heard he had on soulseek...and anything I am missing I am sure will turn up someday. Aside from that though, I am totally amazed that this guy kept that much ORB/KLF material up for so long, for free, no questions asked. Even though I never managed to get access to this site, I still say thanks for keeping it, as I am sure as people downloaded things of the site and posted on soulseek, all that ORB goodness managed to make it to my hardrive, one way or the other.

What people don't understand saying they got in once and never again,
is that their ISP might block port 21 or their router is not set up properly or some BS like that. For the few that "never got in" I tried to help them and figure it out. Most got in and were able to use it for many years. 5 years it has been up in one form or another. I just think that it is time for a break. I might get it back up and running after we find out
where we are gonna be living. Don't know. It takes a lot of time, not to mention hardware, to keep files there and trouble shooting for people that ask can you help me figure out port 21 and what is passive

You Renigade FTP naysayers are shitheads. You know, despite many efforts over the years, and many different computers, I have yet to get onto this ftp site; I was even one of the many people who received personal answers to the question 'what is passive mode' and 'what is port 21'. It just wasn't in the cards for me to get onto this site; totally no hard feelings for RMStringer, that MY computer doesn't fit HIS ftp....and you know what, I found most of the stuff I heard he had on soulseek...and anything I am missing I am sure will turn up someday. Aside from that though, I am totally amazed that this guy kept that much ORB/KLF material up for so long, for free, no questions asked. Even though I never managed to get access to this site, I still say thanks for keeping it, as I am sure as people downloaded things of the site and posted on soulseek, all that ORB goodness managed to make it to my hardrive, one way or the other.

I don't understand the spiteful remarks concerning
RMStringer and his
FTP. Did he really insult you with telling the list members that he had this or that stuff on his server, albeit a bit too frequently :))? Did he ever refuse to give the log/pass details to anyone afterwards? Did he make you visit his FTP against your will? Did he set up the FTP to steal your credit card numbers? Did he let in only the people who gave him something in return? Was it his regular job to organize files according to everyone's desire? Did anyone of you set up an FTP with high bandwidth and loads of rare Orb stuff (excuse me if you did - I cannot recall if I saw any other FTP mentioned on this list for years) for everyone to enjoy it?
For me, RMStringer's FTP worked fine. Sometimes I could not log in, sometimes the speed was too slow - so what? RMStringer didn't owe me anything to meet my demands. Yes, there's soulseek for people with fat bandwidth, but for poor sods like me who live in Russian outlands with a crappy dial-up connection, his FTP was the only source of rare Orb and KLF stuff that I would have never found anywhere else.
So, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Mr. RMStringer for the job he's been doing for years, for us, for nothing. It would be a great pity if the server goes down forever.

You know, despite many efforts over the years, and many different computers, I have yet to get onto this ftp site; I was even one of the many people who received personal answers to the question 'what is passive mode' and 'what is port 21'. It just wasn't in the cards for me to get onto this site; totally no hard feelings for RMStringer, that MY computer doesn't fit HIS ftp....and you know what, I found most of the stuff I heard he had on soulseek...and anything I am missing I am sure will turn up someday. For me, RMStringer's FTP worked fine. Sometimes I could not log in, sometimes the speed was too slow - so what? RMStringer didn't owe me anything to meet my demands. Yes, there's soulseek for people with fat bandwidth, but for poor sods like me who live in Russian outlands with a crappy dial-up connection, his FTP was the only source of rare Orb and KLF stuff that I would have never found anywhere else.
So, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Mr. RMStringer for the job he's been doing for years, for us, for nothing. It would be a great pity if the server goes down forever.

Jason, what are you talking about? You are sounding crazy. As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with Tim C. We were all there during napster, grabbing our early copies of Cydonia too. That Yungle is not any better than anything you could get prior orbsessions. This is not tape trading. Some people do burn and up, but its so rare. Most people archive on their hd or mp3 cd's, as most people have mp3 players. Add to that the people that are anal about bitrate.

That's not true, when you go from mp3>wav or even mp3 on your HD to mp3 on a disc a 0 can easily become a 1 and vice versa, these minute errors can pile up and cause a loss of fidelity, regardless of the bitrate. Since there's nothing attached to the mp3 to make sure the that the integrity of the file is maintained, mp3 is considered a "lossy" compression scheme for audio. I'm sure you've heard mp3s that have that weird breakup on the treble that is either due to crappy encoding originally, or too many generations of mp3>whatever>mp3. Copying to disc = potential problems but the error correction is different for data files and music files. How many copied (backup, mind you) discs of say, Windows have you seen to have corruption? It would be pretty obvious.... I'm not sure if burning an MP3 file to CD is the same as copying CD data from CD to CD - but I believe it would fall into the "data files" type of burning category, and hence be error-free. MP3s do have their own error correction scheme as well, see that Wikipedia article I referenced earlier in this discussion. As far as recording a CD (as opposed to file burning which again is a different setup) goes, the recording speed does affect the error rate. As far as MP3 not being "lossless" compression due to the copying/corruption issue - false. MP3 is lossy because the compression algorithm causes information to actually be discarded. When you uncompress you don't get it back. T

Since there's nothing attached to the mp3 to make sure the that the integrity of the file is maintained, mp3 is considered a "lossy" compression scheme for audio. I'm sure you've heard mp3s that have that weird breakup on the treble that is either due to crappy encoding originally, or too many generations of mp3>whatever>mp3.

I was talking about peer to peer applications being new when Napster came out so the files hadn't been circulated as much. I can imagine some guy in the 60s with a disc of mp3s wishing he had some way to play the thing, and wondering how the hell he encoded it since there was no such thing as PCs. That's funny.

You Renigade FTP naysayers are shitheads. You know, despite many efforts over the years, and many different computers, I have yet to get onto this ftp site; I was even one of the many people who received personal answers to the question 'what is passive mode' and 'what is port 21'. It just wasn't in the cards for me to get onto this site; totally no hard feelings for RMStringer, that MY computer doesn't fit HIS ftp....and you know what, I found most of the stuff I heard he had on soulseek...and anything I am missing I am sure will turn up someday. Aside from that though, I am totally amazed that this guy kept that much ORB/KLF material up for so long, for free, no questions asked. Even though I never managed to get access to this site, I still say thanks for keeping it, as I am sure as people downloaded things of the site and posted on soulseek, all that ORB goodness managed to make it to my hardrive, one way or the other.

I don't understand the spiteful remarks concerning RMStringer and his FTP. Did he really insult you with telling the list members that he had this or that stuff on his server, albeit a bit too frequently :))? Did he ever refuse to give the log/pass details to anyone afterwards? Did he make you visit his FTP against your will? Did he set up the FTP to steal your credit card numbers? Did he let in only the people who gave him something in return? Was it his regular job to organize files according to everyone's desire? Did anyone of you set up an FTP with high bandwidth and loads of rare Orb stuff (excuse me if you did - I cannot recall if I saw any other FTP mentioned on this list for years) for everyone to enjoy it?
For me, RMStringer's FTP worked fine. Sometimes I could not log in, sometimes the speed was too slow - so what? RMStringer didn't owe me anything to meet my demands. Yes, there's soulseek for people with fat bandwidth, but for poor sods like me who live in Russian outlands with a crappy dial-up connection, his FTP was the only source of rare Orb and KLF stuff that I would have never found anywhere else.
So, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Mr. RMStringer for the job he's been doing for years, for us, for nothing. It would be a great pity if the server goes down forever.
