Re: [Orb] Thank You Song from G.T Teatime/Baz Lurhman
That some guy named William Burroughs wrote 'The Naked Lunch' and a whole host of tripped out, drug influenced and fantastic novels. Go rent the film if you ain't seen it, best experienced a little toasted I find if you know what I mean, and tell me if you finally understand it after watching it for the umpteenth time.
It's called sarcasm, look into it. Of course I've both seen and read (well tried to read anyway) Naked Lunch, I'll stop trying to be witty from now on. . . _________________________________________________________________ Get business advice and resources to improve your work life, from bCentral. http://special.msn.com/bcentral/loudclear.armx
I haven't actually read any of his books but I have just finished reading this fantastic book called 'Writing on Drugs' by Sadie Plant. If you have even a mild interest in any drugs then this book is a MUST READ. It gives you a whole new angle on why we do it and what it does to us. She goes on about Burroughs a lot. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0571203388/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/202... It covers almost everything and everyone from Thomas De Quincey and Coleridge through Michaux, Freud, Hofmann, Gibson and naturally Burroughs to name but a few right up to how the Chinese got hooked on Opium (that's a real eye opener), Bush's Andean Initiative when he was head of the CIA and the US funding of the mujahedin guerrillas and we all know what happened to them... Hash, Opium, LSD, Coke (& Cola), MDMA and so on and so on. Stuff you've never even heard of. One part about Burroughs' work basically says that he wrote it all out, chopped it into pieces then rearranged the paragraphs, sentences, words, much like the host of substances covered do with our perceptions. Sounds about right to me. My favourite quote from the whole book, talking about Hofmann's early experiences with LSD-25; 'A more deliberate experiment with LSD-25 confirmed Hofmann's initial impression. 'I thought I had died,' he later wrote' Personally, it's helped me a kick a few nasty habits I have recently had, understand why see the world in a certain way and gives you loads of really nice'n'interesting tit-bits of information to impress all of your mates down the pub with. Now, I'm off to find out where I can get some wild lettuce from... Happy reading. Anyone else found a gem like this lately? Billy Werner Stoll JASON HICKS wrote:

Just wanted to pipe in...I'll try and be brief http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0521662605/102-2687628-6725741 ?v=glance It's Maragaret Atwood's latest I think [or is that Alias Grace?] anyways it's all about the writer/artist and their relationship to viewers/reader/audience, and the medium of writing in general. Very well written and LOTS of references literary and other. No real drug connect here so I'm bascially off Orb related schtuff...It's a GREAT read and helped me out a lot on this wacky coast after I moved... Was that brief enough? So sorry Artnok p.s. I believe as well that Burroughs had been writing Naked Lunch in segments while travelling in Morocco[? I must be wrong-o here] and sending back what he wrote at a trickle to Ginsburg and both of them teamed up after Burroughs returned and de/reconstructed the book on the whole...or was that the Yage Papers? I hope this helps someone... on 3/12/04 3:37 PM, billy.b at billy.b@virgin.net wrote:
