I use soundforge 5.0 Slow but effective. For example, on my 1.4 GHz p3 dell, it takes about 9 minutes to open a 9Mb mp3 (by comparison a 9 Mb .wav file will open in about 10 seconds-ish). I am assuming that the time involved includes the decompression to be able to edit. I could be on crack, though. I am by far no where near an expert, just a hack. I have sf5 if you want it. dawson -----Original Message----- From: sunny bather [mailto:leftfieldsunbather@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 06, 2002 6:03 PM To: orb@mailman.xmission.com Subject: [Orb] mp3 manipulation does anyone ot there know of any way to edit mp3's? i have a 6 hour mp3 (so many roads box set), and I want to cut it into 5 parts thanx, shawn ps: anyone know where to download the dhs video for hous of god? _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com _______________________________________________ Orb mailing list Orb@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/orb
this is sub optimal as you would be recompressing already compressed mp3 files thus compounding sound quality issues introduced with compression. (ie more notible pre-ring, muddier bass, etc.) the interesting thing about mp3 files is that they are (minus the tag crap) 100% data. just split the file! then you have two mp3s that are half the length but "byte-perfect". If they are normal mp3 files (not VBR) you can even calculate the exact byte of your cut by doing some simple math. _ b On Tue, 6 Aug 2002, Chris Dawson wrote:

Use Winamp to uncompress the MP3. SF is too slow. I have other encoders and decoders. RazorLame is one that I use. Very good prog. I also use Audioactive production studio Pro. Winamp does this very good; IT takes about 5-7 mins for a45 Meg MP3. Stream Box VCR has an Encoder/Decoder with it also. Very good for Real Media files. again decoding and reencoding is a worst case scenario. you are going to lose alot of quality with each reencode... On Tue, 6 Aug 2002, RMStringer wrote:

Look for a program called "mp3asm" MP3 Assembler. The point of it (besides fixing broken MP3s) was to cut and splice MP3s without (de/en)coding them. -- jeremy avnet / brainsik .:.
I agree with what you say if you use a cheap encoder. Audioactive Production Studio is a Professional encoder. I have seen very little degradation in Quality using this prog. I can put it on my FTP for you to try out if you would like. Let me know. Thankx RMStringer _________________________________________________ "Know what I'm talkin about, Jealousy, and Fidelity, Envy Cheating, Beating, and to the G's they be the same thing So who you placin the blame on, You keep on singin the same song Let bygones be bygones, you can Go on and get the hell on You and your mama ...." Soundforge 6.0 has a lot of improvments from the previous versions. They basically re-wrote the backend as well as most of the functions so opening an mp3 file doesn't take any longer than a .wav file anymore. I opened a 5MB mp3 in around 10 seconds. And this is on a P3/500Mhz. Do yourself a favor and definately upgrade. Hell, as I said before, there are plenty of places to download a crack for the demo version of Soundforge 6.0. But you didnt hear it from me. g -----Original Message----- From: orb-admin@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:orb-admin@mailman.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Chris Dawson Sent: Tuesday, August 06, 2002 3:15 PM To: 'orb@mailman.xmission.com' Subject: RE: [Orb] mp3 manipulation I use soundforge 5.0 Slow but effective.
