LX in Chicago 10/24 - news on Badorb...
Hello all, I made it out to the Smartbar in Chicago Thursday night to Catch LX's set, and apparently not too many of you were there. I'd say at most there were 40-50 people at the club. LX went on around midnight & spun to around 2 am or so. He played a new remix of AHEGPB and that Eminem vs Toxygene mix, with a lot of Kompakt artists. Even though there weren't that many people tere, I had a good time - LX & I chatted for a long, long time- maybe about 4 hours or so beforr and after his set. He gave me details on all things orb, past & current colaborators, the fate of Badorb, his little orb girl Mia, his histor with Metro, and anything else we felt like chatting about... Anyways, Badorb records is finished. The last release is BOB14. He told me the reord pressers ran out of money, and asked for more from LX, who's still waiting to receive a returm from the records sold. The intent was good, but it ended up being too much work for a miniscule amount of satisfaction. Also, Kyle Zeto's mom threatened legal action for his song being on their release. Apparently she thinks he's entitled to some of the profit from the sales... She'll be waiting a LOOONG time for that. The Orb is now on Kompakt Records. Any and all following releases will be through that channel. The new Orb album is about 70% done. LX has been working with Thomas Fehlman almost exclusively on it. Witchman is still in the pictue too. He didn't say anything about a working title, or at least I don't remember it. Lx also mentioned the work he'd been doing with Jimi Caulty, and that Jimi admits LX was right about not having the Orb break up after their first album. The Orb's publishing rights go up for bidding next year and Kris Weston and him have been talking about buying them back, Kris more positively than LX. Prayerbox has an abum just about finished and will most likely be released on Invisible Records next year. Simon gave me more info on it and mentioned letting me have a preview on it. LX talked a little bit about the early days as working for Killing Joke, and a run in they once had with Grace Jones, along with them touring with Joy Division. (I gave LX a copy of Grace Jones' cover of "She's Lost Control" earlier) I met Chris Widman, a local DJ who works for WLUW's "Abstract Science" and recorded LX's set back in February. We talked for a while, and he mentioned that he knows fellow listee Wallace Winfrey. He didin't have his DAT with him to record LX's set, but I did. He even hooked me up directly to the mixer! I offered him an exchange for a clone of his masters. We'll see what happens. I ended up leaving around 4 AM with LX and his tour manager (or driver). Before they sped away, I grabbed an old liscense plate from my car and handed it to LX. The reaction he gave it was better than I anticipated- He got very emotional about it and gave me a hug. We said good bye, and wished each other safe travels. As I got in my car, I realsed I left one of the discs I wanted to give him in my stereo!!! Doh! Well, I guess that's what the mail is for. It was a night to remember for sure. LX is one of the most genuine poeople I've ever met - his heart is in the right place for making music, but then we all ready knew that. Right Orbies? Kwinkunx news follows. First off, anyone who isn't satisfied with just the preliminary mixes can get themselves over to www.mp3.com.au/kwook/ and listen to five complete tracks off the album (including the two most directly inspired by the Orb, "Space Turtle" and "Pink Fish") in MP3 format. Goes without saying that the versions on the CD don't have the compression bubbles of the MP3 version. :) As i'm writing this a few of the tracks haven't cleared yet, but the people over at mp3.com.au are usually very good about clearing submissions quickly. They should all be ready to listen to and download by Wednesday. Speaking of the CD itself, anyone with a credit card can now grab Kwinkunx online at chaosmusic.com -- the direct link to purchase is http://www.chaosmusic.com/shop/product.asp?productID=838911 - if you want to hear the tracks ahead of time, you can check out the mp3.com.au site given above or http://www.kwookyworld.com/kw.php?node=4 for the five minute mix previews. The CD launch on 22 October was a superb cock-up promotionally with no CDs at all selling, but our set was pretty damn good. Sadly, this didn't make much difference because nearly everyone had left by the time we got to go on for half an hour before closing, much of the time beforehand being taken up by the usual uninteresting house music with the odd live performance. Our lateness going on stage was due to the band playing before us being more partial to getting smashed on free piss than actually playing anything. (And when they did play it was boring sub-GYBE dross. 'Lake Disappointment' is an apt name for that particular band, really.) We got a nice round of applause at the end of the set, but i really rather would have sold some CDs. And now, back to your regular Orb bit. At 07:57 PM 10/27/02 -0800, you wrote:
