I think the free/donation route is putting a little too much trust in people. Personally I would like the option to download individual tracks and the entire album at a discounted per track rate. In other words if there were 14 new tracks available on a "virtual album" $1 is reasonable if I only want a single track or two but I don't think I would pay $14 for the 14 tracks when I am doing the extra work of downloading & burning versus purchasing the outdated way. Also, downloadable artwork for slightly better looking homemade cd's a definite plus. Subject: RE: [Orb] The State of the Union This is interesting ... The thing about internet bull junk Is that suddenly the monopoly that the music business enjoyed in distribution and promotion has whittled up shit creek.. Now they are pooping their little panties trying to get a stranglehold round the internet market/ copyright laws / licensing hence apples new store and rumours of a buyout of universal which is one of the biggest MF satan sucker music companies... They need pampers for men... Would you pay more money than a normally priced record if you knew it was independent and going straight to the artist? Would you subscribe to the site of a musician to receive extra shite like dj mixes unlreleased tracks n junk Like an annual junk bullshit fee? I was contemplating making all my tracks available for free And then just let people donate an amount If they got some mileage out of em.... Do you think that would work? Would you rather d/l albums / ep's Or single tracks ? How much would you pay for a single track Etc etc et cc cc c blahblahb Standard price set by uk mcps is something like 1 pound per track? Or is it one dollar.. fuck Yeah I can check that if youre interested The pho list is most informative on all this shite :) Later K
for a working example of how a band can dispense music for its fans via the internet without getting screwed themselves one needs look no further than Phish. granted it is for live shows, but as it currently works Phish uploads soundboard copies of their live shows at most two days after the show has been played. then the user has the option to download the show in mp3 (lossy) or shn (loseless) format. given that a phish show is around 2.5-3 hours and i pay around $11 bucks for a shn version, it's a very beneficial situation for all parties involved. they make their money and i have more music than i know what to do with. of course people can share with their friends once they download it to get around the paying thing, but i think the true fans wouldn't do that msot of the time. but maybe i'm too trusting in humans. so it's possible. and it can work. now if only the orb would do a huge tour and release SBDs of all the shows we could be happy. tweez --- John Wintemute <johnw@mgci.com> wrote:
