I remember the day audiogalaxy got shut down. All of the sudden, soulseek was flooded with new users. The server couldnt handle the capacity, the webpage kept going down because of bandwidth being exceeded. Nir tried to cope with the expansion, but the quality of soulseek just went to shit. Even when I could log on, doing a search that would have returned excellent results, now returned shit. And I was lucky to get shit.. because 2 out of every 3 searches disconnected me. Download queues skyrocketed into the 700-1000's. Soulseek used to be a great community of people where you could find great quality music. It wasnt a place to go download an album just because you were too lazy or cheap to buy it in the first place, it was a place to go find that one album you were looking for that was on ebay for $150 or if you just wanted to be experimental and try out random obscure music. Oh well.. goodbye soulseek. --- Joe Topjian email: jtopjian@nb.net web: http://terrarum.net

Suddenly Soulseek had a fiendishly huge amount of new users and lots of refugee Audiogalaxy channels. Big backlash.

Everything on the Internet turns to brown fungus eventually. It's the closest the Net has to an immutable law, even moreso when it involves a service that starts off with a wee number of well-etiquetted people operating within accepted consensual boundaries which gets so big so quick that the spirit of the community gets flushed away like a wet turd. It happened to Usenet in the mid 1990s, for instance. Not nice to watch. 'Tappens, anyway. Me, i got the British version of Aubrey's 2 today and discovered a storming Orb track i hadn't come across before (the Nobel Prize Sentinel thingy), not to mention that Soulseeking has sucked away a lot of my monthly download priv, so i'm pretty equanimitous about things right now.
