Orb remixing Art of Chill Volume 4
Hey Orbsters - Here's some news for ya - this sounds VERY promising! Just got word that The Orb have just completed compiling and mixing a new compilation for us ART OF CHILL 4. he booklet features a cartoon drawn especially for the compilation by Jimmy Cauty and also contains exclusive ORB track "Codes" Its releasing 13 Aug in the UK - no idea about US dates. Platipus Records is the label. I have the artwork and will post it on the discog before the weekend's up. Here's the tracklisting & some PR: “The tunes on this CD need no introduction, just two ears & a human with a love for the chilled things in life, here is Art Of Chill 4! Crack open a chilled Guinness & think on ...” - Alex Paterson The Orb virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. Now they invite you to sample their ART OF CHILL, a 2 CD set that welcomes aficionados of downtempo, and encompasses the influential records both old and new that define the genre. Pioneers like Eno and Bowie sit comfortably alongside brilliant, future classics from the likes of Gas and Husky Rescue. Most of all this selection will make you listen in a different way – through the eyes of the masters of the genre. Alex Paterson has been a leading light and pioneer in the art of chill. Whether it’s his outstanding contributions to The Orb, his exceptional skills as a roadie to Killing Joke, his legendary DJ sets, or collaborations with Steve Hillage as System 7, Alex Paterson and The Orb have created the perfect crash pad for many a generation of worn out club kids, and a perfect place to escape for their peers. From the surreal to the outlandish - all calibrated through The Orb’s uncompromising filter - plucking current gems from the obscure, and rekindling some pearls from the past this collection is all cerebral stuff. It’s a personal invite to his audio gallery and to see the world through his ears – for an hour or 2 at least. SOME WORDS FROM ALEX PATERSON: When Jimmy Cauty & I (as The Orb) started to play chill out sets in the summer of 88 @ Transcentral we never knew that it would bring so much interest from the music world! Taking friends back after a hard nights clubbing we played with our samples & sounds & chilled while tea & spliff bounced into a perpetual dawn, little did we know that people would actually listen to us…1989 and the press were looking for an angle and The Orb had just released A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Ultraworld & it was different to anything @ the time! We were also thinking of little fluffy clouds & the 1st album, then Paul Oakenfold asked us to chill clubbers @ The Land Of Oz. Jimmy Cauty & myself took our studio up to Heaven every Monday night, after spending Sunday sampling a weekly favourite tune we would then spend 7 hours Djing that idea. At one of The Land Of Oz evenings we were playing around with Rainbow Dome Musick by Steve Hillage and he was actually in The White Room chilling out & listening! Steve & Miquette then worked alongside me on The Orb's "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" doing 2 tracks. Later as System 7 Steve, Mimi & myself did the tunes Sunburst, Thunder Dog, Dog & Miracle for the System 7’s 1st album called ... System 7. Later I met Youth and he joined Killing Joke and I was their roadie. I found Eno in the winter of 1980. Thanks you! Still in the 00's there is still some very beautiful piece's of music being made & here's my selection ART OF CHILL VOLUME 4 – CD ONE MIXED BY THE ORB 1. Transit Kings - The West End Of A Duck Going East 10. Andrew Thomas - Fearsome Jewel 10 11. Husky Rescue - Sleep Tight Tiger TRACK COMMENTS CD1: 1. David Bowie - Warszawa Taken from the album LOW. 2nd side is a master class in ambient music, stunningly beautiful to fall asleep to on the auld turntables that played over & over continuously. 2. Andrew Thomas - ...3 Used to play this with "There Will Come Soft Rains" with Dr Spock narrating the Bradbury classic! You should try it! 3. The Orb - Edelblau We gave this track to the Japanese for their own release in Japan. Not on Kompakt. 4. Nina Walsh - Narcissist Taken from forthcoming album on Malicious Damage called Bright Lights. Very elegant music from Miss Walsh, it's a long story so, I’ll leave it for the book. 5. Mad Professor - Dub Power Way back in the early 80's in my old friend Lo's back garden I heard this classic piece of echo & dubness! Crazy cover crazy dub me crazy was born. 6. Ennio Morricone - Duck You Sucker My mum took me to these Country & Western evenings above the off license on Lavender Hill when I was 12 & it kind of stuck with me since! Horses too. 7. S Hillage - Garden Of Paradise Used to play this in Land of Oz in the White Room. Going back to horses hello Miquette we both love the sound of horses in the rain. 8. G Gut - Tip Tip Very old friend from the joke days, Gudrun has an ear for the weird & kitsch! With her MONIKA label out of Berlin this is a cool tune from a cool woman. 9. Rootmasters - I Nearly Married Janis Joplin’s Mum... This is a fun thing between myself and the talented Miss Walsh. This is the most chilled we will be, apart from Nick's arse. 10" out soon. 10. Transmission - Beyond Light The reunion of the original powerhouse of Killing Joke are back! Need I say more? Beats & drums & cured bass with electronics fluttering. 11. PCO - The Sound Of Someone You Love Who's Going Away & It Doesn't Matter Another one after starting work @ E.G. this was one of the bands that made me smile. If you saw them live you're know. Thanx Alec B. 12. B Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain A tranquil piece taken from the album by the same name. There are so many pieces of music from Mr Eno; you are one of the roots of modern ambient music. Thank you. 13. The Orb - Falken Bruck (Falcon Brook) Written for an ambient end that has no beginning or no end. Taken from ‘Okie Dokie It's The Orb’ on Kompakt. Tried to bring about a feeling of warmness that an end is only the beginning. TRACK COMMENTS CD2: 1. Gas - Gas 1 The birth of a new German sound a floating in my boat with the most beautiful girl sound! This became a blueprint for the future. 2. Autolump - Lumpy Psalms Me old mucker Lump & his mate Ian Auto born in Hull but knows much much more. No deal no matter check out <autolump.com> 3. Ulf Lohmann - Nicht die Welt A soft sound of mayflies gather in flowers around my ears. A tune from the stratosphere. 4. Opium Jukebox -Smells Like Teen Spirit A cover of a cover! Hip-hop loops make this track brilliant. I wonder if the Red Sox heard this one? 5. Kaito - Inside River Another tune from the mighty Kompakt label out of Köln Germany. This has the passion of water on ice, very nice ! 6. The Orb - Codes Taken from the forthcoming album called The Dream (Mare Desiderii). Jellyfish’s bass, gliss guitar & chill hop riddims collide into a 1000 fragments of messages... 7. T Fehlmann - With Oil Taken from HONIGPUMPE V2, it's another example of genius @ work. Recorded in Berlin & edited on the far side of the lunar @ 8 beats per century. 8. Schneider TM - Cuba TM Taken from ZOOMER on City Slang. One of my favourite albums of the 00's - need I say more. 9. Transit Kings - WEOADGE "West End Of A Duck Going East" is a live version, recorded in the fields of Fuji & the Big Chill. Still looking for that duck who landed in Moscow & was never sighted again? 10 A Thomas -...10 An interlude taking me back to ray! 11. Husky Rescue - Sleep Tight Tiger This was played to me by my old mate Max out in S F, thank you & it fits with the birth of our 1st son "Tiger". Top tune! Cheers! rach ------------------------------------ Rachel's Orb Discography http://www.backsideoftheorb.com
The transparent yellow vinyl and packaging for Orbsessions 2 is great. It was worth the extra week or so wait. Just gorgeous...and the music ain't bad either. Listening to Orbsessions 2 reminds me of how much better Cydonia could've been. The CDR promo versions are so much better than what was eventually released. Also, there's a horn sample in It's a Small World that's from a reggae track but I can't think of where it's from exactly. It's been driving me crazy!!!! Anyone know? I'm going to start digging through my reggae records and CDs until I find it! -matt _________________________________________________________________ http://imagine-windowslive.com/hotmail/?locale=en-us&ocid=TXT_TAGHM_migratio...

doh! sorry the last message was supposed to be private.

Uh, well I saw the Orb at Bestival last night. They did a 60 minute set to close out the festival. I counted 3 tracks from the forthcoming album The Dream, which will come out in January now instead of this month. They performed as a 5 piece with The Corporal as mc, Youth on Bass, a drummer and the standard mixing desk and LX on effects. They had some minor sound problems at the beginning due to a sound engineer who was unfamiliar with the Orb's setup. Visuals are now beig projected on the equipment tables and all 5 of them were dressed in white. The audiende was into their set and the Big Top tent was filled close to capacity. I saw 2 people with really old Orb t-shirts over the weekend but dunno if they're listees. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for a deal? Would have loved to have seen the Orb last night. But since they weren't in SoCal did the next best thing, caught Underworld at the Hollywood Bowl. Top form, best I've seen them since their Santa Monica Civic show of a few years back. But not quite as good as the Organic '96 appearance. Very nice visuals and the sound was outstanding. Started the evening on Santa Monica Blvd. with Thai food at Sompun. Some of the best Thai I've had. Eagerly awaiting the Orb's next visit to the Southland. fvll
