Subject: [Orb] The Orb on NPR? Reply-To: orb@mailman.xmission.com
While driving to work today at about the 8 O'clcok hour, the local NPR station (Chapel Hill, NC) does their regular station id. I have been hearing this music in the background under the announcer and I swear it is little fluffy clouds, but not the album version. They play this sample quite a bit and the reason I think it might be the orb is because they have played stuff like Moby, DJ Shadow (new album out yet?) , Banco De Gia, etc.
Has anyone else who listens to NPR heard this or am I wishfully thinking? Thinking maybe the while station id is local, the music they get to play might be from an approved list blah blah blah.

The station IDs are indeed played and created by the station. They usually have a set of short clips that they use for these bits (if they're like our station in Lousiville they play the same ones over and over and over and over... and won't play mine!) but sometimes it is a song being played by the NPR show (like All Things Considered or Morning Edition) during the break. You should be able to contact your station's music director fairly easily to get the answer to the question. Funny thing about NPR is it's the only station in this city that plays anything electronica-ish (this does not include the pap played on all the satellite radio stations like Janet Jackson and family).
Subject: [Orb] Fireman ( McCartney & Youth..)
Bbbrooo@aol.com asked: (re: Fireman} "I'm intrigued, is this music any good?"
chilled, ambient, very nice - should appeal to Orb fans. get the "Rushes" cd; also a nice dub on the Liverpool Sound Collage cd. the "Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest" cd is several variations of the same track. dan
I just went and dug my 1993 copy of this album out of my collection to give it another listen. I remember thinking at the time that it was pretty cool. Hell, the Beatles were one of the first to create soundscapes on records and definately sold more copies of them than any of the prog rockers (I think "The Wall" might have beaten out Sgt. Peppers on total sales but who's counting beans?) so it should be no surprise that McCartney would be into what is THE pop sound of today. Even the Stones (those wonderful thieves) have delved into modern electronic sounds. I'm burning it now and if I can figure out how to upload to Chain Reaction, I'll send a few songs up. I would like to suggest the band Material (especially Seven Souls and Hallucination Engine) for all y'all. This is a Bill Laswell thing (with Anton Fier, Bootsy Collins, and many others). I've got a bunch of really rare Laswell things I'm going to upload to CR... as soon as I figure it out. I can produce huge audio pieces on my computer but I can't even get ftp programs to work...
Subject: [Orb] RE: Artists similar to the Orb Reply-To: orb@mailman.xmission.com
A bit OT but anyway;
-System 7 I love this group! Alex was heavily involved in the first album (777) as was Brainand many other incredible talents... I've recently realized that someone stole most of my cd singles. I've only got four or five left and it hurts. Please don't steal your friends' stuff.
-KLF A piece of advice from KLF for all musician's (quote from a magazine article I read years ago): If you know how to play an instrument, stop immediately. Take it to heart.
<snip> from System 7 post. We are also planning one of our special live sessions with Alex Paterson on the Glade Stage at Glastonbury on the evening of Sunday June 30th. This project is now called Loophead, and we have released a track - Firefly - under this name on Alex's Badorb label. <snip>
Hey!!! That's cool! Where can I get a copy?
afternoon folks...some new live / dj dates are below:
JULY 27 - Saturday FINLAND - Koneisto/Machinery Festival ** ORB LIVE **
JULY 28 - Sunday FINLAND - Koneisto/Machinery Festival Alex DJ @ Festival - Chill out set on the beachfront stage....3pm - 6pm!
AUGUST 3 - Saturday LONDON - Essential Festival - Hackney
...i don't know if the last one is a dj date or a live set, but would assume it's a dj date, although there's not yet any confirmation on the www.essentialfestival.co.uk site.
cheers,
--- Smiley
So when are they going to be doing a cool show here? Oh, that's right. There are never any cool shows here...
Some of my favourite times at glastonbury have been system7 on the same billing as other great acts. I'll never forget seeing them, BancoDeGaia and Eat Static on one night. Or never remember it. Or something. It was good anyway. I think.
I am so jealous.
Ain't nobody like the Orb, but I would recommend Future Sound o= f London, Sun Electric, Bill Laswell's Divination project, Fripp/Eno, Spa= cetime Continuum, and Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works (Vol. 1 is deci= dedly more Orbish than Vol. 2)
btw comparing Sasha and Digweed to the Orb should be punishable by death.= ;-)
What about BT? He's better than the Orb ;). Any references to BT being anything but a good imitation of good music are simply humorous: Institute for Psychic Reform Change your Mind www.ifpr.homestead.com
I've definitely noticed this on my local NPR station. I've heard Air, DJ Food, the Orb, Aphex Twin, and some FSOL. It's always seemed a little odd to me that they play these tracks as fillers or in little segways, but never play any of the full tracks in place of their usual classical stuff during the day. Has anyone ever tuned into or heard a radio station that plays mainly electronica? --- Alan Evil <alanevil@bellsouth.net> wrote:

Don't know if anyone heard this (I certainly didn't), but Radio 1's 'Breezeblock' show on 1st April, listed the following track as being played: Art Of Noise - 'Art Of Love (Remix by Yatsu & Orb)' (White Label) http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/tracklistings/hobbs_breezeblock_20020401.sht ml Of course, it could be a misprint, and be the 'Remix by Youth & Orb' mix from the Auntie Aubreys 2 collection, but as it's a white label, I dunno... Hmmm... Anyone know any more info on this? l8rs, Nick ;-)
I found one in Chicago, 88.9 FM. Problem is, the lightbulb in my lamp is a higher wattage than their antenna. Otherwise, it's Charter Digital Cable's "Origens", channel 903 in Madison. Not sure if that's the one on other systems. Gavin --- bi11i@yahoo.com wrote:

We get that here in Phoenix on Cox Digital Cable. Though it's not over the air, check out www.somafm.com. They have some good stuff.
