Chapterhouse! I've still got two of their cds. Loved that band. Their second album came with a cd of remixes that was just awesome. "We Are the Beautiful" both mixes of that song are wonderful. Was Primal Scream part of that scene? Or more a product of it. I think it was the remixes of bands like Happy Mondays and Chapterhouse and Curve that really turned my ear towards electronica. So much of what was out there at first was for the X-munching gay dance crowd (read extended mixes of the worst of the worst of the disco era), at least in New Orleans. I always loved the quirky, though. I listened to a lot of Brian Eno, Tomita, ELP, Genesis, other ambient and "new age" artists I can't remember, and "world" music in the 70's and 80's (I didn't start collecting music myself until I was a teen but I had a music addict uncle who turned me on to tons of stuff from the time I was four or five). I think listening to and playing jazz in my teens also left me really open to the ambient collage stuff. What were your influences pre-Orb? I gather from a lot of the first time listening answers that many of you weren't even vaguely familiar with electronica or ambient before finding the Orb. What to do, though, eh? Where have all the hippies gone? How can we make our voices heard when the media dismisses the already growing anti-war movement outright? The media even dismisses the possibility of peace outright! The shift in focus has already occurred - used to be talk of war to prevent Saddam from owning weapons of mass destruction (weapons that quite probably don't exist.) Now the major outlets are already talking about what the post-Saddam regime will look like. Around the globe, people are taking to the streets in protest of this illegal, imperialist action. So we're not alone. People want change, but the people are ignored in favour of the support of big business. Where have all the hippies gone? Why are we all so fucking complacent? What to do? Seriously, we need ideas, and fast. There's creepy stuff going on in America, and it's cancerous - it's becoming pandemic really quickly. "Those poor Americans, eh? and how much of that is based on the Regime? i don't see any complacency -- i see FEAR. some Americans are scared that Al Qaeda will kill them next, and those of us who think that possibility is very slim are afraid that Our Own Government will imprison us for questioning them. it hasn't happened yet, but i think it's only a matter of time. in all honesty i have been seriously considering emigrating to Australia!

Michael Moore attributes the 'american way' (of violence) to fear and denial- but he stops short f making a deeper conclusion- I don't know if he realizes what he is even saying, which is that the real cause of all this is the *first amendment*! So far as I know, we are the *only* country in the world with something like it, although it is definitely de facto otherwise, as it is in England or Holland, for example (although the inverse- where the right to freedom of expression is not explicitly guaranteed, but yet anyone can say what he likes anyway). Can anyone verify this? As long as someone can make money by striking fear into the masses (the media) and invoke the First, America will get more fearful, just as pointed out in Bowling for Columbine. If I were an energetic and ambitious expert in constitional law, I would challenge the right of the corporations to get away with this, and take it to the supreme court; I'd begin by pointing out that by frightening people so- a whole nation- the media is doing something very much like yelling 'fire!' in a crowded place... using free speech irresponsibly, which is *not* protected speech. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" Also, I'm making steps to leave this country and go someplace else less bellicose and hypocritical (any suggestions? I'm an artist- Ireland? Holland?). And BTW, I currently reside in Oregon- this place is one of the few places in this country left with any sensible folk. (hard to believe I was once a young republican!) ===== **********compassionat.net**********
As Constitutional law is one of my favorites, Could anyone answer me this; Does the American Costitution mentions "in written" that the Americans have the right to bare arms or such a right is just interpretted by a more general article? And when such an article was voted? By whom and under what circumstances? Thanks in advance... Dimos ....................................................................... I have no idea! we don't even know our own constitution! But it seems that each state decides in what way we must bear the arms- I know in some states, one isn't allowed to carry a weapon concealed (it must be out in the open! people will behave differently toward you if they *know* you're armed), and in some states you aren't allowed to carry it openly (I think). "Amendment II A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Many cockeyed persons take this to mean that one should be able to resist the authorities. Really, though, it seems plain to me that all that the 2nd amendment means is that you have a right to help defend the country, or the security of the country. The interesting thing about the amendments, though, is htat they can be *overturned*, for example, if two-thirds of the senate *and* house of representatives wanted to overturn the First amendment.....! I'm right about this...? (Aren't I?) Just like how prohibition was instituted then repealed a few years later... --- Dimos Thanasoulas <ourpc@netonline.gr> wrote:

damn right blair's been making me sick for years, but his arslikhan approach to dubya is disgusting he has the chance to be the voice of reason - but he thinks by nodding and saying "yes sir no sir 3 bags full sir" he'll improve the "special relationship" between our countries. which basically means bush claims to be our special friend whenever it wants blair to do something, then imposes sanctions against us, just like with every other country, when it suits and there's nothing to be gained from blair and blair being the sad, insincere, publicity-addicted, approval-seeking piece of shit he is, bends over and spreads his cheeks for dubya, the first minister of the church of latter day morons, who's just an oil baron starting wars to help out his oily friends make oily money
and where is Putin when we need him? Russia and Iraq are buddies, yet Putin doesn't want to get in the way.....
Russia is enjoying being able to use extreme military force in chechnya, with no chance of repercussions from the west, because Putin has agreed to support dubya's war on terrorism in exchange for the west turning a blind eye to essential anti-terrorist action in the former USSR it's a shame that i read similar views from people all over the world, especially in the US, from people who don't trust the regime as far as they can jizzlob, but noone's doing anything (i know i'm not) fuckin' guy fawkes knew it, man ;) stop ranting too much time in a meeting today need beer -- "A woman drove me to drink, I never had the courtesy to thank her." - W.C. Absolutely. I picked up Global Communication's Pentamerous Metamorphosis mainly because I had the aforementioned Chapterhouse double CD and the GC release was billed as "Chapterhouse - Blood Music retranslated by Global Communication". What a pivotal acquisition that turned out to be :-) Cheers, CDRich CDs for sale or trade - new CDs added every Sunday: http://www.geocities.com/CDRich69/

well..... might be stretching things a lot, but my first electronic love was... popcorn! back in 73 or so, when I was a wee lil' kid played that record to death :D oh yes, dj agust (aged <36 months) in da house... laying on the phat tunes (or more like, ruining the records & the players, but hey, I only wanted to play music... ;) next after that? jarre's oxygene. heard it first on some compilation album in 77. --- Agust "nemesis1" - aaj@centrum.is - ICQ: 1290264 - http://nem1.cjb.net free your :) [tm]
