[this is such a geeky thread - i love it more than i'm prepared to admit!] ok, so i wasn't stabbed in the neck or anything as dramatic as that, but i was living in England in the early 90s, and my pal whipped out the Patterns and Textures video while we were tripping at his house - i've been in love with Perpetual Dawn ever since! (that bass and funny/creepy laugh - who can resist it?) some time later, i went to the shops and managed to get the two disc UF Orb by mere fluke (i wasn't as obsessive as i am now, and thought the cover art looked good) and proceeded to play it for just about everyone i knew (and then some). my excitement over the music quickly developed into an insatiable passion! my first live Orb experience was actually in Japan (osaka) at this tiny club in maybe 93? i was studying abroad there, and grabbed an English language paper for some relief, only to discover the orb was playing *that night* for the bargain price of the equivalent of $50 (US)! after negotiating everything with my host family (no easy task - how the hell do you say "my absolute favourite band in the whole world is playing here tonight, and i know its tuesday and i haven't done my homework, but i *have* to go!!" in japanese?!?) i took a Japanese friend to this tiny place for a fantastic show (i guess supporting the Tong Poo/Technodon releases, as i picked those up a few days later). it opened and closed with DJ Lewis, so the boyz could come out and dance after their set! i was pretty much the only non-Japanese person there, so i went up and had a rather inane conversation with Andy (still in his long-haired days - thrash'll have a go at me for mentioning that, i'm sure) who was incredibly nice and we both basically talked about how much we enjoyed the show - him playing, me listening/dancing. i've been to maybe 6 or 7 live Orb gigs, and that was the only one i did sober, and it was incredible nonetheless. though i think my fave show was the last one here in SF on the last tour - i swear, Perpetual Dawn went on *forever*... (the sound system was amazing and Simon on the live bass is such a treat! that more than compensated for the Coachella disaster that followed) whatever happened to DJ Lewis, anyways? =) rachel ------------------------------------ Rachel's Orb Discography http://www.migoto.com/orb

Dude, you're awesome..... If you ever want to do something like toilet paper LX's house or give Pandy a wedgie, I'm there bro. I have nothing against them personally, but sometimes people need to be put in there place, and nothing says it better than pulling someones pants up their crack. So how does Fehlmann fit in all of this? Lemme guess: He's really the evil leader of the Orb and communicates via a samll intercom a la Charlie's Angels.... They'd actually be my favorite band in the world if that were true. Thrash, keep up the good work. Yer Pal, Gel-Sol

Rather than ask how many on the list are drug users, I'm curious as to how many are not... I'll be open and honest in saying that drugs have quite a bit to do with the origin of my musical tastes (especially with the orb. The fist time I heard them I was listening to some ABTU after eating some really nice Blue Unicorn LSD.) I pushed it a bit too far in my younger days and spent 5 years as a heroin addict, but other than that me and my friend, 'drugs' have gotten along fairly well... Tons of weed, a lot of acid and some ecstasy and mushrooms had a lot to do with my life and especially my music from early to mid 90's. Have quit all chemicals several years ago but still enjoy the herb very much. I don't drink very often though. I also went through tons of pain pills after the stabbing thing and became dependant on Stadol (a very very strong synthetic opiate) and went to rehab for that one. I don't take any drugs and never have, ok maybe that one time when everyone else in a sealed car got stoned and I was driving I felt something... Anyway, drugs are not the only way to get into an altered state. Obviously some exercise is like a natural drug, and I often find my perception of music heightened after, say, 40 lengths in the pool or a three mile walk. Or even just crack open a beer and turn it up, that often is enough to release me from the cage... -- Chris Morgan <cm at mihalis.net> http://www.mihalis.net Temp sig. - Enquire within
for anyone wanting to give up drugs or smoking swimming is the answer! after about 5 nights of swimming every night - you feel so much cleaner inside you sort of forget why you ever botherd to inhale tary shit - or whatever stuff you where on! the first few nights are hard - but after that it s so much easyer - and then just go once every few nights - exercise is the answer! i managed it - for about 3 months i was off everything - i still went clubin - i danced about 3 times as much as normal cause i had so much more energy - but then i did a recording session a nd the producer was smoking a bong - and just one -JUST ONE suck on his bong (i said bong ...not penis ) and i was back to square one ! still thoughs three months where the most healthy of my life since about 14yrs of age- im gonna try again soon - just ive got some duty free fags to get through first! Yeah, I don't quite remember the first time I heard the Orb, because that year was a bit of a blur of booze weed and shrooms. Really discovered (Brittish) electronic music then: Orb, Orbital, FSOL, Aphex Twin. Used to trip with one of my best friends for hours with Orbital's The Box (long version) on loop. Don't get stoned or trip anymore though. Just stopped being enjoyable. Maybe I was just getting the shit weed. And I thought I should attempt to graduate from college at some point. Still working on it. reed

yeah, that San Fran show was insane... I remember thinking when Perpetual Dawn came back from it's detour, "holy sh*t... that's right! That's what I have been listening to" Anyway, back in the early 90's I was djing a lot of indsutrial and industrial dance and I was getting into the Acid House movement (lots of M.E.S.H. and PTV, English Boy on the Love Ranch, and acid ambient noise). I heard little fluffy clouds on a local radio station and heard that The Orb was coming to play at a small club in Santa Clara. I was living in the Santa Cruz mountains and I was going to drag my friend with me kicking and screaming to this show. Well, that night my car rebelled and I missed the show. It is still my biggest concert regret. I should have hitched a ride. Cool orb moment?? I think I shared this once. I was driving back from San Francisco on hwy 280. It was probably 3:00AM and my car had the little orb window sticker "The Orb - don't leave earth without it"... we are passing another car when I see he has the same sticker on his car. So we pull up next to him and start pointing at the sticker. He gives us a big smile and "the nod"... I didn't loose any blood that night, but sometimes it is all about "the nod" I wonder who that guy is?? darcy ( dj monolith ) --- "-> rachel" <rachel@migoto.com> wrote:

ok, so i wasn't stabbed in the neck or anything as dramatic as that, but i was living in England in the early 90s, and my pal whipped out the Patterns and Textures video while we were tripping at his house - i've been in love with Perpetual Dawn ever since!
(the sound system was amazing and Simon on the live bass is such a treat! that more than compensated for the Coachella disaster that followed)
whatever happened to DJ Lewis, anyways?
=) rachel

Was the one in L.A. a small black Mercedes 2-Door (300CE)? If it was, that was me. I left the sticker in the car by mistake when I traded it in almost six years ago. I bought a new car 70 miles from my house, realized what I did right when I got home, turned around and drove back to the dealer and it was already gone. I have frantically been trying to find a replacement sticker since. I even found the single on a British CD web site which said "includes Orb window sticker". I paid $22 with shipping and of course when it showed up about 2-months later there wasn't a sticker with it. I really miss being able to show my Orb pride whenever driving around.
