It was the first time I saw the Orb, Orbus Terrarum tour June 1995, at La Luna in Portland. They closed the set with LFC and there were these swirling sun visuals, Simon's bass was kicking and sounded so sweet as well as the live drums (whoever that was). And everything just "came together", I turned around and the dude behind me had the biggest most genuine grin on his face, an expression of pure happiness and I was right there with him. It was the first time I ever went to a live electronic show, and it hooked me, I think I've been searching for a live experience to match up to it ever since. Magic Orb Moment #2. In college I had room in the mountains of Santa Cruz (more like Bonny Doon for those in the know) that looked out over this amazing lushly vegetated gully with a deck and the whole deal. One of my favorite Saturday activities at this time was to ingest some liquid early in the morning and just hang out by myself in my room and on my deck for the first few hours. If you've never tripped by yourself before I highly recommend it, so much easier to reach a state of bliss with no outside distractions. Anyway I was listening to the Ultraworld album and AGHEGPB comes on, which at the time was my least favorite Orb song (not anymore though). Something about the tones touched something off in me, the reptition of the arpeggiated sequence and I started crying. It was one of those utterly soul cleansing and beautiful cries, where you feel all the layers of bullshit built up over the years cracking away. Like you are really alive in that moment, and it just feels right. Being in that state and really listening to all the different sections and samples in the song, it made me think that song is sort of an auditory summation of the history of all life on earth. Incredible experience. Thanks LX, Thrash and Youth for providing the catalyst, and thank you all for listening to my nostalgic rambling!
