The daytime temperature regularly exceeds 100F with no humidity so by the time you get thirsty you're already dehydrated. At night the temperature often dips towards freezing. On top of all this people are constantly blowing shit up, creating massive fireballs, electrocuting things with millions of volts, launching large, flaming projectiles and stuff like that. It actually says on your ticket that by entering you take the risk of death. Absolutely awesome event. I would also recommend that you not take your own vehicle unless you plan on washing every square inch of it inside and out including pressure washing under the dash, throughout the engine compartment, trunk, etc. The salt flat (playa) is a caustic basic powder that will eat any kind of metal when you add some moisture to the air. Also leave your really nice camera and electronic toys at home unless you can afford to have them IMMEDIATELY torn down and professionally cleaned when you get home. Either that or prepare to replace them soon after. Rent stuff, people. The second year I went there was a rare thunderstorm that turned the surface to glue.
