I don't really know what got me hooked on the Orb initially. I really got into electronic/dance music around '95. I can't remember where or when I first heard an Orb tune. But, I instantly could not get enough. I had never heard such full electronic music. It isn't just highs and lows with predictable drum machine loops and rolls. It is a composition with complex layers of sound, beat, and bass. One memorable moment occurred when I popped in Orbus while watching Metropolis. For some reason they synch really well. From the very beginning where the workers are marching to their jobs under ground and the sample on valley states, 'you will speak directly to me . . . we are in complete harmony, we are inseparable . . . we have learned patience.' To when the heroin is opening the eyes of the workers to their fate, we come to the last stages of Montagne D'or. Where there are scenes of oppression and destruction and the bass is getting really fuzzy and the effects go out of control (around 9 mins). By the time we reach Occidental, it becomes really intense. Our hero is chasing after our trapped heroin who is in the villains lab. The erratic beats match nicely with his frantic pounding on the door. The villain is busy setting up a robot to replicate the heroin. While he is messing with the controls and knobs for the final preparations, the music is perfect. Then, the sample of 'start the machine' occurs just when the last switch is actuated, and the evil robot is energized. The music, once again, is perfect. It is pure chance, but hey it looks and sounds good. You might want to give it a try. Just cue the tape and cd to begin around the same point and let it ride. Oh yeah, I also caught the Orb for my birthday while they were in Atlanta for the Cydonia tour. I picked up an Autolump tog. It was great fun. I stood in the middle middle and enjoyed the evening.
