Please pardon me, I rarely contribute to the list, but avidly follow the Orb's every move. I just had to contribute on this topic. I agree with some of Don Gagen's points below. Yes, The Orb (and KLF) did invent Ambient House. Yes, Mummie Don't is basically evidence of that fact. I am not sure when that track was recorded but I imagine it was sometime before 3AM Eternal? Maybe part of the Space Sessions that Alex was removed from...who knows? Anyway, the point is, that was quite an ear opener for the disc and definitely reminiscent of that time. I was impressed just by the fact that it was unearthed from the archive and placed on Orbessions. However, I am not going to argue the fact that Orbsessions is a hodge-podge mixture of just about everything under the sun, and is farily sub-par. The disc started out on a very promising note and ended with a desperate whimper. "Sail" was by far one of the best songs on the disc that the Orb had nothing to do with. Where did that song come from and why haven't we heard it up until this point? What's the story behind it? We've all head Yungle before - outtake from Cydonia. Not really that exciting, but not horrible. Certainly not worth listening to for 11 minutes, and we've already downloaded it off the Internet. As for the rest of the disc, my only question is why? The tracks were mostly dull, uninteresting and boring. The major disappointment about the disc was that Mummie Don't was placed on it. That track set a standard for the rest of the disc which it clearly failed to live up to. Orbessions volume 2 could be interesting - but hodge podge mixtures of unreleased tracks from various eras don't work for an album, particularly for the Orb (Alex, are you on this list???) "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" and UF Orb were great albums because, collectively, they were brilliant pieces of work. If Alex wants to collect various tracks from a certain era of the Orb, then that might be a better way to do Orbsessions. Let's face it - "Okie Dokie" versus "Ultraworld" are recorded by different bands. Don't get me wrong, I like Okie Dokie, and I like the Paterson/Fehlmann combination - I think it's probably the best thing Paterson has recorded since Orblivion. But I had higher hopes for Orbsessions. The Thrash contributions are sorely missed, and any Orb album should be a journey in my opinion. Thoughts? I'm listening to it now and it's f-ing brilliant! I'm not one to start flame wars, but for anyone to say the whole album is crap is an ignorant comment or just elitist snobbery. Maybe you don't fully understand that tracks like Mommy Don't, and Pluto Calling were made when House Music and sampling was still in its infancy. The first House record was released in 1986. The first use of samples in House was by Todd Terry in 86 or 87. Ambient House was basically invented by the KLF and Orb around 87 or 88. These tracks might be dated by today's standards, but at the time they the bleeding, freaking edge of the genre. It's hard for me to understand how anyone can listen to these tracks let alone the whole album and call it crap. It reminds me of when people saw the first impressionist and cubist paintings and called them crap.
Orbsessions was meant to be crap - it's a compilation of old rejected songs. I like some of the tracks (Mummie Don't, Pluto Calling, Yungle or Eurofen), but most of them are crap (especially Steel Horse, Something Like, Sun Of and 73.5) and one is not Orb at all (Sail). I wonder what crap we will find on Volume Two... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- INTERIA.PL | Kliknij po wiecej >>> http://link.interia.pl/f18c1 _______________________________________________ Orb mailing list Orb@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/orb Report list abuse to list-abuse at studio-nibble.com
