ahhh...yes. the good ol' days. my bro has "Parallel Lines" on that vinyl. but think that was a Half-Speed Master. can't remember. pricey indeed. the only gold disc i bothered with was Genesis "Abacab" in a box. the book contained all 6 covers. nice. --- Alan <alanevil@bellsouth.net> wrote:

Mobile Fidelity/Masterdis was the company. Before their gold cds they made audiophile lps. Their manufacturing tolerances are incredibly high which explains the very high price on those things. The lps were amazing: 100G (I think. They were super heavy) black virgin vinyl, the metal master plate was direct cut and limited to 250 pressings, I think (regular records would use a wax master (metal plated wax cut plate) up to 5000 times though I think the usual limit was 2000). The artwork was reproduced fairly faithfully but not with any kind of flair and they had that banner thing. The cds used gold because it would last longer and imprinted better, I think. They also had a pretty cool case that locked the cd down when closed and then sort of lifted it to you slightly when open.
Does anyone remember dbx encoded lps? Those were the tits. Every bit as good of signal to noise ratio (what was it? like 96db?) as a regular cd player but with all the depth, richness, and virtually limitless frequency range of a purely analogue signal. I had a Technics dbx deck that was as good as a later 3 head machine I had. I've still got a Califone 3 head reel to reel. I use it a la Can. Though I'm no Holger Czukay, that's for sure. But then again, who is?
So in closing I'd like to comment that I re-wired my car's stereo this weekend and added a subwoofer and new front door speakers. It's no competition system but with 50w in all four corners and 200w in the trunk it sure feels good. And an mp3 cd player. Fuck vinyl. I'm going to burn my whole collection...
sh. I don't think they heard me. I'm sorry my lovelies. I'm sorry.
Oh my God! WHAT HAVE I SAID!?!?!
