On a similar southern note: It is late 1991 and I just met a girl who was into something called dance or rave music or whatever. I was listening to Nirvana and thought I had found something "cool" and was beginning to realize that there was music beyond The Cure and Metallica (strange mix but it worked for me). After experiencing acid and clubbing for the first time I was very interested in this new music that was neither The Cure nor Metallica. So I head down to the local Record Bar in my home town (tiny little ass place in eastern NC where all they play is Country/Top40/Classic Rock/Beach Music) so finding something dancey (sp?) was a long shot and I knew it. When I reached Record Bar I looked for the gayest/most GQ salesmen there figuring he may know something if stereotypes hold true. I asked for hard dance or rave (no knowing what I was asking for) and he said that heard of a new cd or band called the orb and said it might be what I was looking fro. He hadn't listened so he couldn't tell me either way - he was just looking to make a sale. He took me to the dance section and I picked up THE ORB'S ADVENTURES BEYOND THE ULTRAWORLD. The packaging seemed nice enough and the tracks sounded kinda cool. And I figured what the fuck. If I don't like it, they had a reasonable exchange/refund policy. Dropped the cd in my little portable cd player rigged up to the tape deck, cranked up the volume, and was hugely disappointed right form the beginning. This was neither hard nor dancey. Supper pissed. Very super pissed. After deciding to copy this POS and get a refund (I needed something for my wasted time and money), I drove home to do just that. Feeling somewhat better at my decision to exact revenge on some asshole in record store who just wanted to make a sale I just let the cd play. By the time I arrived home I realized that this music hit a nerve very deep within and was somehow familiar and comforting. I just sat in my driveway staring into space and listening. My opinion had changed a complete 180 and the ideas of what could be done musically had changed dramatically. Kinda like going someplace where you know all the good parking spots are going to be gone anyway and yet you happen to find an excellent spot without trying. Yeah, I knew I was home musically. Never looked back. PJK please don't hate me because i can't type..... --- All the cool kids are doing it: HTTP://www.EvilSponge.org _______________________________________________ Orb mailing list Orb@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/orb
