ive done a bit of recording with portable minidisks - you would get a better recording with a DAT -mini disks hav ATRAC compresssion - but mini disks are so much easyer to use and you can throw the disks at moving cars and still playback the recording! i use a sharp 722,bought it 3 years ago - its pretty good - there must be a better one now though ! there are a few web sites out there that give you the chance to compare products on screen things to look for on these are: 1.try get a mini disk player with a digital out - so you can if you want - output straight to cd with no converting!mine hasnt really wish it had!!!!(without digitalout you have to convert twice -once to analoge and second back to digital to get it in your computer) 2. try get a high signal to noise ratio on the pre amp of the mini disk- so if you record something quiet there is less hiss on the playback! 3. mine has an extra battery that you can plugin on the side using standard AA baterrys - you may need this going on holiday ! 4. maybe get one with an internal compressor (auto audio level setting) so you dont have to worrie about distortion! a good feature on mine is you can hit record on the remote of the headphones this way i can keep the mini disk recorder in my bag rarther than having to get it out when i need to record - i just have a longish mic cable sticking out my bag and keep the mic in hand ! with the remote in my pocket! if your just gonna record you and y mates on mushrooms buy a cheap minidisk and use the mic provided - cause you could just leave it on a park bench !!-- this way have more fun and not have to worrie about it !!!! you can use moving coil mics - sure sm57-sm58 these you can pick up for about £30 second hand £80 new -last time i looked! they are good because they wont distort from speaking to close the frequncy response isnt as good as a capacitor mic but its o.k Plus you dont need phantom power! and you can always add EQ when you put the recording in your PC! Mics :expensive way!using capacitor mics! i always use a portable phantom suply unit(which gives 48volts) (can get these from studio spares for 40 quid) with an AKG se300 or c460- these mics are really sensitve and have a reasonably flat response ( ie pick up all frequencys evenly) so if your recording birds of the tweeting variaty (not porn stars) youll get a nicer sound- clear/cleaner crisp sound) i use two for stereo add it works really well - but i hate atrac compression on mini disks !!!wish in a way i had bought a DAT but the problems you can face with these capacitor mics is the wind ( though you can use a fluffy pop sheild) And also talking to close to the mic ( pissed rantings) can be a problem -the mic just pops and it sounds shit hope this helps - ive just read what ive typed and my mind is spinning - hope yours isnt ! ----- Original Message ----- From: "dx dx" <richardspeck@hotmail.com> To: <orb@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 7:33 PM Subject: [Orb] OT: Minidisc players and Amsterdam
