OK, here's what I've been listening to - I wouldn't entirely consider them to be "new", but they are somewhat current. 1. Mr Scruff - Trouser Jazz (the DVD 'single' is nice - has 3 videos, old and new, and one unreleased track). The CD itself is pretty good with some fine dancing tracks, although not quite as good as Keep it Unreal. 2. Recloose - Cardiology - definitely one of the better, practically unheard of, albums of 2002. Get out, buy it now, now, now! You can dance, but also listen to this one. 3. Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense on DVD. Fantastic live performance in 1984 by one of the more unique bands of their time, and directed by Jonathan Demme (same dude who did Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, etc.). Lyrics are nice and cryptic, and the music is original and catchy. The special features are not bad either - I got a kick out of how detailed the storyboarding was. 4. Pub - Single - not bad for hypnotic ambient type stuff. I need to relisten to this a few times though. This is a good listening album. 5. Funki Porcini - Fast Alseep - Another fantastic CD from 2002! I've actually listened to this while drifting off to sleep, so I've yet to finish the complete album. Another "must buy"! 6. Biosphere - Subtrata (OK, maybe not a new one, but new-to-me). I wonder why people call this 'classic ambient', as it doesn't really seem to be... However, it is a powerful album - invokes lots of images of the Netherlands, midnight sun, permafrost, etc. I happened to buy this CD around the same time I saw the original Norwegian "Insomnia" movie, so I associate both strongly with each other. 7. The Only Bip Hop Record You Will Ever Need, Volume 1 - This is a V/A compilation from the Luaka Bop label, of contemporary electronic music... You'll recognize Mouse on Mars and one of Autechre's offshoots on it, but the other artists I've pretty much never heard of. I like this compilation a lot, and I have to mention the whole pseudo-textbook linter notes are very funny. That's it. Out of all of them, the most mind-blowing ones for me would be Talking Heads and Funki Porcini.
