Brand X is a Genesis offshoot that you might like. It's a bit more "jazz" than "prog" but who cares? Have you listened to the Rick Wakeman solo albums? Good stuff. How about Emerson Lake and Palmer? The first side of Taurus is pretty cool. The first ELP album has some beautiful stuff on it. Brian Eno's ambient albums (Music for Airports and the like) are great but I'm sure you've listened to them. I'd like again to boost Tomita as a pioneer of electronic music. The last Amon Tobin sampled him and I've heard his sounds sampled in FSOL's newer sets. For something a bit off the path but really intriguing I'd recommend Esquivel's Cabaret Manana. Very quirky compositions and very groovy production values. As he was working at the very conception of stereo recording what he managed to do with two channels (usually just two microphones in the studio) and an orchestra is quite remarkable. On one session he actually used two studios down the street from each other and two orchestras which may be the first ever example of a distance studio session. Raymond Scott's stuff is also worth close listening. I know I'm veering away from electronica and prog but I've always thought, "FUCK CATEGORIES." Some nice things I've gotten of late include Highdropod's last album (www.highdropod.com) which I think is just amazing, Manteis Recordings, Whitney Biennial 2002 (listen to an insane performance artist's dialogue about pulling out pubic hair, the creaking of the World Trade Center in the wind, and hillbilly rap), and that album where they remixed Alan Lomax's recordings (can't remember the name right now but it's really pretty cool). I'd also like to recommend people go back and listen to their Police albums. I don't know why but I'm recommending it. Any of you that remembers the summer of 1983 must have strong memories connected to Synchronicity because every single song was on the radio all summer long. Remember radio back before Clear Channel? Yeah, that was great. Oh, one last thing, anyone that likes They Might Be Giants should check out http://www.homestarrunner.com/expfilm.html for a new video and if you look under "puppet stuff" http://www.homestarrunner.com/toons.html you'll find some short videos with them and Homestar. ____________________ www.psychicreform.com ____________________ And if you don't dance you're no friend of mine... --"The Safety Dance"
