This is DIY for a PC running XP or another MS OS. I assume the process is similar for other OS. You basically need to run an "error check" on the drive. On some systems its call scandisk or checkdisk. After that it will create a bunch of CHK files from the data that it recovered. The files might be hidden, so make sure to change the drive properties so hidden files are visible. They are usually placed in a oddly named folder. The vast majority of your data should still be there. The only problem is that it cannot recover the names of the files for you. The best you can do is run a utility that will sort out the file types and change the CHK extensions to the original like JPG or MP3. I basically had this happen to a huge drive full of thousands images for used for 2D and 3D work as well as some 3D models. The process became so tedious that I decided to save only the 3D models and most essential textures. If the pros can get the file names back it might be worth the money. Here's where I got the utilities to recover the file extensions http://www.ericphelps.com/uncheck/ "There is no greater joy than soaring high on the wings of your dreams, except maybe the joy of watching a dreamer who has nowhere to land but in the ocean of reality." Subject: Re: [Orb] ot hard drive death I checked out some data recovery places, and they told me it would be anywhere from $600-$2900. Fuck that. I just busted open the lacie this weekend and inspected everything. I'm just gonna hold on to it now until I can find a cheap way to recover my stuff. $200 down the drain. A dvd burner might be the way to go, Alan. I back up most of my stuff to DVD, but i have projects that are over 4.7Gigs...now I'm so paranoid I'm prolly gonna copy my DVDs 2 or 3 times. Just curious but can't you get that hard drive repaired and recover at least most of what was on it? That causes me some panicky feelings as I use two external hard drives extensively, and one of them holds all my works in progress. I copy songs back to my fast HD to work on them. I've gotten sloppy about backing up to cd-r as some of these new individual pieces are growing to upwards of a gig each.
