By the time Orblivion finally came out, I was trained by years of earlier Orb records to expect a certain pay off when listening to the music - throughout the entirety of the song. I won't argue that the songs on Orblivion aren't good, but for me the high points of this album are like pop choruses - only happening once or twice per song. I enjoy listening to most of them, but the album from start to finish (for me!) does not hold up as a unique listening experience. And I disagree that Passing of Time is a great and lasting Orb track. I think it tries to cash in on an earlier idea but doesn't quite live up to the bench marks set by previous releases. About Kris Weston - I think he is very powerful. But I don't understand why his solo discography is short when measured against his talent and potential. There should be album after album out there. Why not? What happened? [Weston fans should check out: Time Tunnel (Buddha Stick Mix) with Goma]. His departure from The Orb was like some kind of mythological event in my life. Interesting that Bicycles and Tricycles has not come up in this thread. I sent a scathing review to this list when it came out. I give no high marks to Okie Dokie as well. If you didn't know The Orb and picked either of them up before anything else, would you be compelled to buy more? I absolutely agree that Youth and Steve Hillage makes the new project sound promising. Collaborations between them and Alex have proven very fruitful in the past. I'm genuinely looking forward to this. Is anyone else nostalgic for Alex's Groovetech sessions? I grabbed them with Total Recorder at the time and consider them to be a real gift. I think they are proof positive of Alex's excellent taste in sound. That is what makes me buy everything he works on. I'm very forgiving of what I consider his "mis-steps" because sooner or later he puts something out that will last forever, which is what originally separated The Orb from everything else. Lastly, I think The Orb needs to do more internet gigs. Lots of them. I would pay for it. All of this is just my humble opinion. mvh --- Music For Listeners <musicforlisteners@hotmail.com> wrote:
Just two cents on the replies.......
I seem to remember a lot of people slagging Orblivion when it was new. It's not bad, but the songs are just two short. It should have been a double with the same songs, just longer.
I love all the proper Orb records, but U.F. Orb and Pomme Fritz are my personal favorites. The bridging point between the first two era's as it were. Blue Room alone is pure collaborative genius.
When I talked with LX last year, he told me that Kris was still being immature.....sadly from all the weird things Thrash has said on here, I would have to agree. I wish he was there, but if he's going to be immature about his "Orb" dealings, then I can't hope for him to return. I really love his work on the first System 7 album too.
As a comp, "Okie Dokey" is alright, but it's not worth tons of repeated listens. I do hope they turn away from this low sample, harder edged stuff.
LX also told me that Youth "wants to make a "real" Orb album". We'll see.......
..and finally......all this talk of collaboration, I wish Mixmaster Morris would co-write an Orb song.
