Matt, This is an excellent topic. I recommend the following: 1) Steve Hillage's solo endeavors, namely Fish Rising 2) Brian Eno's stuff (Taking Tiger Mountain esp.) 3) Gong (stuff with Steve Hillage, I think, is better) 4) King Krimson 5) Rennaisance 6) Can 7) Fripp and Eno - No Pussyfooting esp. One other of note, but you may not like as much (although I do), is Aphrodite's Child's album 666. It features Vangelis on synths and percussion, and is quite good IMHO. Orb has shown me the value of our prog rock ancestors, as well as though of current fame. If the baxter colorado clip is really from a yello magic orchestra remix then I am very curious about checking them out, i heard that someone from them Ryuichi Sakamoto or Takihahuso or whoever has been putting out recent solo albums as well as movie music.
My question is who should I explore 1st. Can, or Gong or.... I don't know what to go after for old albums. I am sorta chickenshit to buy older CD's, especially since they probably were recorded for vinyl release anyhow. What are the listees top recommendations for semi-orb related albums prior to 1980 or so. A top 10 would be nice, or something to help me sort through the rubbish.
