I don't really know if this counts as a "Magic Moment," but here goes. The first time I heard the Orb my hippie neighbor was playing Live 93 and was raving about how this is the best music to get high to.....At that point in my life I was listening to alot of prog rock and offshoots of prog rock, so I was down with things like Can, Frip & Eno, Floyd, etc., and I played guitar in a band that was trying to do more experimental work. When I heard Live 93, I remember thinking how fat the bass was compared to most of the music I listen to, and how cleverly they used samples in their mix. Wow, a "techno" band that did not offend me. It still wasn't enough to get my to buy the album. About a year later, my roommate picked up Orbvs Terrarvm, so we decided to have a "sesh" and listen to it. I won't go into detail about my love for Orbvs, but listening to Oxbow Lakes changed me and my musical direction forever. I had never heard a song that sounded like it swallowed itself. I also liked the idea of an almost cheesy, new age piano line being crushed by sounds that were toally foreign to me at the time. So, to make a long story short, I now write "electronic" music and I have gone way beyond what I thought I would ever do with music. Then when I found FFWD and found the Orb was playing with Fripp, it all seemed to make sense. Maybe one day I will be able to produce an Orb remix. I've got White River Jvnction in my sights. "listen to the radio....." And just so it seems like I'm not brown-nosing Orbsters past n' present: Fuck all of you!!! Yer Pal, Gel-Sol www.gel-sol.com
