So where were all the Bay Area Listees on Tues? Too old to make it out on a school night? Lost the drive to step away from the stereo and shake your tired ol booty? Well, you missed out! The Supperclub gig here was, albeit a bit bizarre, but heaps of fun and well worth $15. The whole deal was that there was supposed to be an ambient set played during the Supperclub dinner, which was priced at a ridiculous $150/person. Sure, laying on beds listening to the Orb play live is a grand idea, but personally, I think that price tag is absurd. Then there was an "uptempo orb set" planned for after, which was only $15. The promotions were screwed up (which is par for the course with these organizers) and all the $15 tickets said show up at 9pm, which is actually when the ambient/dinner set started. The promoter had a bit of an angry mob on his hand over the confusion, so they piped the orb's set into the bar area. Instead of white "dinner beds", we sat on plush red benches to listen, which was fine by me. It was Alex on turntables, cd decks, and some kind of mixer with a zillion knobs on it, with Felhmann on his laptop. The ambient set went for an hour, and is exactly what you'd expect - flowy textures heavily laced with surprise samples, hints at beats that float into another soundscape - a lot of familiar sounds, but definitely nothing canned. There were hints of Barbie Girl and Outlands at points, but the rest seemed a melange of things that sounded familiar, but I couldn't quite recognize. So in other words - it was brilliant! Around 11:30 they let everyone into the main room and they boys came out with an uptempo Orb set as promised - I think we got 10-15 minutes of Towers of Dub right from the get go, which made me a very happy girl. There was a bumpin version of LFC, the now-obligatory freebird, and a number of more Felhmann-ish sounding tunes. The highlight for me was Towers of Dub so everything after that was a bit of a blur. The place was far from packed - I'd say 100-200 at most. It was beyond intimate - LX & Thomas were in the middle of the room, and everyone was dancing around them. They played for at least 2 hours. Surprisingly, I didn't see a single familiar face in the crowd - where were you guys? BTW, Thomas is now sporting a very strange moustache. I found it creepy, in the dirty old man sort of way. So that's the scoop! Not sure if they have any other US gigs in the queue, but if you have the opportunity, especially to hear an ambient set, I'd jump at the chance! =) rach
