this is sub optimal as you would be recompressing already compressed mp3 files thus compounding sound quality issues introduced with compression. (ie more notible pre-ring, muddier bass, etc.) the interesting thing about mp3 files is that they are (minus the tag crap) 100% data. just split the file! then you have two mp3s that are half the length but "byte-perfect".
