Well, I spose youd all like to know how Loophead (LX, Hillage and a blond woman who looked like my gran) were like at Glastonbury? Well .Ill tell you in a second, but not before I big up the Glade Stage and its 3D Soundsystem where they were playing. What a completely amazing stage! Everyday saw performaces from brilliant artists including Plaid, Squarepusher, Mad Professor, Eat Static etc. etc. etc., and come late night, it turned into a café, where mashed-up beats galore continued. On Sunday morning at about 5am, Boards of Canada played- they did their entire set kneeling down and rinsed some quite heavy beats onto their warped ambient sounds. I read somewhere that these Highlanders have only made public appearances something like 7 times in their history, so this was pretty special- although I kinda felt like I might be the only one of the 20ish people there who appreciated the magnitude of what we were seeing .oh and I should probs mention Orbitals set, which was pretty typical of them (Chime, Dr ?, Satan, Impact, The Box, Halcyon, Belfast etc..). All the tunes were well, drawn out though, that must have been a 10 minute version of the Box, at least! They also played a couple of brand new tunes which were both phat. Oh, and before I get onto Loophead, Id also like to pay my respect to the 1 US outfit I saw at the Festival. Thievery Corporation live are the bomb, utterly brilliant atmospherics and Dub Sensibility. Right then, Loophead: I didnt really look to see what my gran was doing, but Hillage made me laugh, he looked like a right gurny, orgasm-faced fool while playing his mini-electric guitar, which seemed to serve mainly as the odd-effect thingy. Still though, seemed like he was enjoying himself. A cool as ice LX seemed to be providing the bulk of the sound (though I think it was possibly my gran who was providing the four to the floor beats). He was on the decks, with the odd FX tool round him, and the sounds he dropped were very Orbular in nature with dense ambient sound and wobbly electronics. He even dropped in segments of Blue Room and Little Fluffies at one point. So, the music was kind of a slowed-down, warped version of a cross between Trance and Techno, but the highlight in my view was the one straight ambient tune they played- which to my shroomed -out mind sounded bloody lush. Then, Im afraid to say that half way through their set, I had to leave due to a pressing engagement with St Germain and a beautiful Australian girl, who I seem to have ended up with, doing a live semi-porn show at about 6am in the cinema field- fortunately there seemed to be only one person still conscious there at that point- and he gave us 10p for the entertainment that was provided! Sorry if anyones got bored reading this, I seem to have gone on a bit, its just that Ive just got back from one of the best weekends of my entire life, and I kinda feel like I need to tell the world (or at least the Orb mailing list!)
