I think producing completely sample based music is an artform much like composing but really different. To hear that quarter of a second in a recording or to realize you can play two songs over each other and create something completely different is much more difficult than it seems. What the sample based artist is doing is using recorded music as instruments. The sound of an lp backtracking or looped is NOT the same as the original recording. The recording is the violin while the sample is the note. The thing is to combine "live" musicians with these loops but not come off all milquetoast and new agey.
