Steve Hillage and gong unconvention

Not quite Orb, but I just wanted to say that the gong unconvention was a tremendous, almost spiritual, weekend. Nostalgic, but great to see the still crazy daevid allen and all his friends, plus all the gong offshoot bands play in one location, and this location was Amsterdam. So much to see and hear, but just the first night University of Errors performed Soft machine stuff + early Alien tunes. Followed by Steve Hillage and band (mainly Fish Rising tracks with a dab of Hello Dawn & Its All Too Much) drifting seamlessly into a 2 and half hour full on Gong with just about everything and the kitchen sink. friend said: >>This was a great great evening on top of a marvellous weekend. Sometimes you forget what it is about a live gig that changes your life - I'd forgotten the feeling that I used to pick up during the Fish Rising/L/Green tours, but last night it was back.>> On the second night: steve hillage and miquette giraudy (system 7) picking up the tempo and were incredible. The last night was a brilliant haze of everyone and everything, and it was videoed so looking forward to seeing it again - look out for the DVD. p.s. Toxygene/Jarre question

I realize that this question has been around the block a few times already, but... I have a few print sources here that discuss the Toxygene being a very remixed version of Oxygene, including some stuff about Jarre being upset and that The Orb had plans to put Jarre's wife on the cover and has a couple quotes from Paterson regarding Jarre/"the French". However, clearly quite a few fans believe it to be a hoax, but why? Did The Orb at any time state that it was a hoax? Or is it just fan speculation/assumption that it was a hoax? I've scoured the mailing list archives and haven't found anything, so pardons if I missed it. Infinite thanks! Jon S.

Alex talks about Robbie

Boyband popster Robbie Williams looks certain to achieve a bona fide club smash, with his next single Lovelight, just weeks after he embarrassingly predicted he could ‘see that song being played at clubs for years to come’ about his recent flop single Rudebox. Lovelight has been radically transformed by Belgian duo Soulwax, who’ve turned in their best production since their 2004 electro-rock anthem, E Talking, and could boost William’s virtually non-existent credibility. The former Take That heartthrob gained limited kudos last year by recruiting Radio 1 late night guru Chris Coco as his tour DJ, though his highest accolade came from another ambient maestro, Alex Patterson of the Orb. Chatting to Skrufff last year, Alex described how Robbie first spotted him playing chess on Top Of The Pops when Take That were also on the show in the mid 90s, prompting the pair to record a bizarre cover of the Bee Gees anthem I Started A Joke some years later. ‘He’s a really sound geezer, he made me feel like I was in Take That for a couple of days,’ he told us. ‘Soon after I was DJing at a club and had the Bee Gees track in my box, so I bunged it on. Robbie came running over, shouting ‘I ain’t got a copy of this’, which made my girlfriend happy because she got to meet Robbie Williams. He’s as genuine as he can be in the circumstances he’s in. He’s sound,’ he added.
