I know this CD has been around for quite a few months, but I've been listening to it again recently and it really is stunning - especially with the current shit that's going on. The those that haven't heard of it, The Fire This Time is a double CD about the history of Iraq and the events leading up to Gulf War 1. The first CD is compiled from lots of news quotes, backed with an excellent audio mix. The second CD is just the audio mix - with tracks & remixes of tracks from HIA, Soma, Orbital, Aphex Twin, Bola, etc, which on it's own is worth it. Even if you already have the CD, it's worth checking out the related website at http://www.firethistime.org as this has all the information that didn't make it into the CD booklet (originally supposed to be 72 pages). This is not fun stuff to be exposed to. It's a heavy metal like lead or mercury, and hence is very bad to be exposed to above and beyond its radioactivity... Of course, we are exposed to 3000 rads of radiation yearly from the sun, earth, and space (in comparison, a chest x-ray exposes you to about 2-15 rads), so it's really hard to say just what is a "safe" radiation exposure and what is an unsafe one. Witness the current discussion of dirty bombs... He said there have been about 4,000 civilian casualties -- including the dead and wounded." So lets see, the iraqi government says there have been 350 civilian deaths that they know of, they have no idea how many military casualties there have been, and that the total of dead and wounded are 4000. I would doubt these numbers as I would doubt anything else that the iraqi government has said, but if you compare that to the paltry 50 or so deaths we've had so far, plus the fact that the REAL death wont start until we enter the major iraqi cities, this is no small conflict. Personally, from a moral standpoint, every death is equal. Its not like 350 deaths is somehow "better" than 4000. 350 deaths is bad. 4000 death are bad. 1 death is bad. Apart from the (side each) CD "Mixmag live! volume 9 (the orb's dr. Alex Paterson / Mixmaster Morris)" have they ever produced anything together? I've just found some ancient Irresistible Force stuff (aka: mixmaster morris) which sounds very "old school orb". If you missed it the first time (as I did) it's worth checking out......very nice indeed. Anyone, know where I can get some "Nepalese Bliss"? bbroo **************** P.S. War bit: I have three general (not totally related to the present situation) War & Peace items that I would welcome comment/discussion on. To keep "orb only" music fans happy it's probably best to post on bi11i's or Brians sites (please let me know which one): Before I do, just wanted to mention that I work at University of Davis Medical Center (main hospital) and we have had a number of regular blood donors refuse to come in and donate blood this time, "as a protest, in case it is sent to US troops overseas"!! 1) Being in the medical field I have to agree that a single avoidable loss of life at any time is a bad thing, but I have always had a problem with the cessation of the 2nd World War scenario. Undoubtedly, many thousands more people would eventually have been killed (on both sides) if the war had not been abruptly stopped by the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.....and I don't mean that this scenerio is anyway related to the sad miscalculation currently being carried out. 2) Why are there no grass-roots democracy groups in the middle east? Perhaps no one there really wants democracy? 3) With thousands of years of deep hatred between certain Palestinians and Israelis can peace ever be achieved? The Israelis should of course leave the occupied territories, but what else could be done to ensure peace in this part of the world?

Adam, You're right - it's very possible had you not made a stink that nothing would have been done. I won't argue with that. On a happier note, though, I'm really glad Deviant and Alex are taking measures to correct the problems. It _is_, afterall, good business practice, and they are of course in the business for the money - which will come when they deal with their clients well. Alex is a good man. He makes my brain tingle with his audio genius (or was that the mushrooms?), and I really love the Orb. I wouldn't have put Orb stickers all over my Porsche if I didn't love them - or get the custom plates for it, either LOL Smiley, if you'd pass my thanks along to Alex, I'd be most grateful. I know you're not his damn messenger, but I _do_ appreciate your presence on this list!! By the way, how come no one's posting war crap to my site? Can't remember if we discussed this one before or not. Found this used CD a few weeks back titled "Select Cuts From Echo Beach." Thirteen versions of the Martha and the Muffins track "Echo Beach." It's on the Select Cuts label from Germany and came out last year. Track 5 is the "Flowing Version" by Thomas Fehlmann and track 13 "Infected By The Scourge of The Earth" by Jimmy Cauty. Pretty good disc. If we did...........never mind. fvll

At this point I would think that any actual statistics being given by either the US side or the Iraqi side would be inaccurate. The US side simply doesn't have enough people on the ground in the areas in question to obtain accurate numbers. Anyone who COULD make accurate assessments of said casulties, eg: iraqi government members, arab TV network reporters etc, are going to give reports which are biased. That being said, I think it would be silly to assume that our bombs are killing only military personal.
