jib sheet diameter, material, and construction
I need to add a missing jib sheet. The existing one looks to be 7/16" diameter. Casey (This Old Boat) recommends polyester double braid for sheets ("Period."). A sail-rite document ( https://www.sailrite.com/PDF/Rope%20Selection%20Recommendations.pdf) has a table of recommended diameters, and it looks like 5/16" would work for my M17. Does that sound reasonable? Thanks, Rob First Time Sailboat Owner
A rookies take. Lighter the better for light wind. Heavier is nicer in the hand. I would lean to 5/16 sta-set, but 3/8 might be more practical.

3/8" NO! Huge and much larger than needed - and likely will not fit with the sheet blocks and jib sheet winch cleat/clamcleat. At the most 5/16", and as I wrote earlier 1/4" is really appropriate for a M17/15 headsail. Use 5/16" for the _mainsheet_ (how Jerry set up the boats). :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred/ On Sat, Mar 7, 2020, 9:50 AM Mike Z <speedernut2@gmail.com> wrote:

I am using 5/16" on my M17 with my relatively new furling jib. Nice combo of not too small in the hand when pulling hard, and not too bulky feeling for the size of the boat & tackle. With the size of the headsail (150 Genoa) and short length of sheet between clew and block I doubt there would be an issue with weight of sheet affecting light air performance. For us cruisers that is! Racers will no doubt disagree :-) cheers, John On 3/7/20 8:49 AM, Mike Z wrote:

Rob: 5/16" is good only if you have trouble gripping 1/4". 5/16" will excessively weigh the clew down in light wind conditions. I used 1/4" for the headsails on M17 & M15 and on the Sage 17 and Sage 15. Strength is not the issue (you could use 3/16" though this is hard on thebhads except in the light winds). 1/4" is so strong you can lift the boat. Get good low stretch double braid line.
