I want to move my 5hp long shaft Mariner out of the transom notch and onto a separate bracket to get it lower. It cavitates when I step out of the cockpit. The motor head sticking into the cockpit also blocks the tiller from its full swing. What bracket or mount do you recommend? The Garhauer does not seem to be available any more. Henry Monita
The mount is available. Sadly Garhauer has a really really poor website. Call them. - 909-985-9993 Also available from Catalina direct - https://www.catalinadirect.com/shop-by-boat/capri-22/hull-deck/stern/motor-m... Garhauer makes almost all the hardware for Catalina. You ABSOLUTELY must reinforce the first gen M17 transoms as they will come off the boat. Yes, the transom. This is first visible by seeing cracking along the joint between the hull sides and the transom - and also happens between the aft part of the cockpit and transom. I've looked at many old M17s that had poorly installed brackets and too-heavy outboards that the transom was severely damaged. Passed on buy-in one because of this (and some other things) needing significant repair. Some time ago Gary Oberbeck described the transom repair he performedafter purchase a M17 with a damaged transom joint. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred/ On Wed, Oct 14, 2020, 9:25 AM Henry Rodriguez <heinzir@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks Dave, I will call Garhauer. $300---ouch! That's more than I paid for my motor! Re transom repair: been there, done that. I remember seeing pictures of Gary's repair. He was my inspiration. http://msogphotosite.com/Scripts/StoryTechnical/storytechnicaldetail.php?id=... My boat had a HUMONGOUS motor mount on it when I bought her. EIGHT (8) springs. I can't imagine how big a motor the previous owner(s) had on that thing. I'm sure they traveled with the motor left mounted on the transom too. That would explain the condition. I will probably add additional reinforcement when installing the mount. I have until next spring! Any pictures or suggestions as to where (how high or low) to put the mounting bolts? I don't think I took any pics of my motor mount reinforcing plate when I put it in. Awkward enough to do, never mind trying to photograph...! Basically I cut a piece of hefty plywood (like 3/4" or close to it) to fit the space below the factory wood in transom (comes down to bottom of rear seat ledge) and the lower edge of the transom, well wide on both sides of the mounting holes and following the curve of the hull where it meets transom. Gave it a couple coats of epoxy to seal vs. water. Sanded the inside surface of that transom area to clean, smooth a few lumps, & rough up area for good bond. Fastened in with plenty of silica-thickened epoxy. Braced & bolted in place to cure, then pulled the bolts & reinstalled motor bracket. I was thinking of moving it, but decided it was fine with the original mounting holes. I did a similar job on the other side for swim ladder mount reinforcing, just a little less hefty, as the leverage area is smaller even though the momentary weight might be quite a bit more... cheers, John On 10/14/20 12:46 PM, Henry Rodriguez wrote:
