I took my M-15 out for its first sail with me at the tiller yesterday. Beautiful day and under 10kts of wind….good for a first sail of this boat. But a question came up quickly when I was cruising across the lake. Do these M-15’s sail better on the bottom or on the side. I think that says it. I did both yesterday and using my weight could balance the boat or if I shifted to the other side could sail the boat on its side. Any opinions on that one. I am not trying to squeeze every tiny bit of speed out of her, but just wondered how others sail the M-15. I would appreciate any thoughts or experience along this line.
Doug: 10-deg of heel or so. Not healing, even going down wind, slows.thw boat. Actually the boat will roll more if you are trying to 'keep her flat' because of the shape of the M15 bilges. Also KEEP the weight forward!!! Don't sit aft. Scoot all the way to the cabin. If you don't have one get a tiller extension so you can move forward. The M15 doesn't do well with the trannsom dragging - really really really important if going to weather in a blow. Dave… Thanks so much for this info. I would have not figured that out. But how can I lay back and sail at the same time….maybe just face backwards!!

I prefer to sail as flat as I can, I know the racers like to heel for more speed, but I am a bit squeamish, so I like to keep it flat. Thanks Steve though you disagree with Dave’s post. I like both ways but just wondered which way produces more boat speed even if I am not a racer. I like heeling over, water on the deck, as well as the sail flat times for another beer and munchies.
