RE: M_Boats: San Juan Island trip report
Mr. Yake, I am going to be an owner of a used M-15. Can you tell me how to read the hull numbers? Mine will be (1981 production) Hull # MMP158191281. ----Thanks, Larry (it needs lots of work) Hughston <larry.hughston@dgs.ca.gov> -----Original Message----- From: Larry Yake [mailto:leyake@juno.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 16, 2004 9:21 PM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: M_Boats: San Juan Island trip report The first San Juan Islands Montgomery Rendezvous finished up last weekend and we had a great trip. All the Montgomery models were represented with Mark and Roberta Dvorscak in their immaculate older model M23 Faith, Fred and Lilly Shelly with their brand new M23 Sea Cutter on her shakedown cruise, Charless and Marjorie Fowlkes in their M15 Vagabond, Randy Graves in his M15 Dinky Boat, Jon Martin in his M15, and my M17 Tullamore. Also attending was former M23 owner Dick Lane in his Nonsuch 28 Swoose. Dick and Ann Lang showed up for the weekend rally but were unable to bring their M17 Sweet Pea. The timing for the trip worked out great. The weather was mixed, with some sun, some rain, some wind, and some calms, but the biggest advantage was beating the crowds. We were able to get dock space together every night in areas where you would be hard pressed to find a spot to drop a hook during peak season. We did anchor out one night by choice and were rewarded with a beautiful sunset. Our itinerary worked out just as planned, with time spent at Blakely Island Marina, Spencer Spit on Lopez Island, Blind Bay on Shaw Island, Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Stuart Island Marine State Park, and we even made it up to Sucia Island, the crown jewel of the whole island chain. But maybe the best part of the whole trip was the people. This was a terrific group to sail with and we had a great time getting to know each other. We shared several meals, explored the islands together, and as this was the first time there for most of us, shared the awe and wonder of this beautiful cruising ground. No wonder people all over the world know of the San Juan Islands. The sailing itself was sporadic, seemingly with wind either dead on the nose or shifting all over the compass with periods of calm mixed in, but with enough sailing each day so you didn't feel like you were just motoring through the islands. Probably about a 50/50 mix, which is pretty normal there. It was a real treat to be able to see the M23's side by side. Identical hulls, but very different rigs and cabins. Unfortunately, Sea Cutter wasn't completely rigged yet, and had to sail under main and jury rigged sprit sail only, so she couldn't really show her stuff, but "Thank you" to Fred and Lilly for coming all the way up from Arizona even though they weren't completely ready. At Friday Harbor, we met up with Scott Grometer (M15) who showed us his Flika and even went up Sea Cutters mast to free up the jammed roller furler. It was a unanimous decision among the group that we definitely have to do this again. So, be on the lookout for next years trip and don't miss it. It just doesn't get any better than this; sailing the San Juans with fellow Montgomeries! Larry Yake M17 #200 Tullamore "In a power boat you get there faster. Larry, The web page you were referred to shows it too - your is: Montgomery Marine Products 15' Sequence # 819 built in December 1981 Mine was built in July and was #177 - I wonder if your number is correct since I don't think Jerry turned out 642 boats between July and December. #189 perhaps ?? The highest 1981 numbers on the Montgomery Register http://www.msog.org/ are 191, 192 & 194 although Bill Rikers' 1982 "Storm Petrel" is #184 ?????? Stan M-15, #177, Carol II
Stan, My boat was advertised as a "1982" model when originally sold at the 1982 Houston boat show but the hull number is MMP151840881, meaning it was built in August '81. So it really isn't out of order. We missed you at the Chesapeake Cruise this year. There were just four of us, but unlike other years, all four stayed together for a full week. Great cruising grounds up to Chestertown and back to Kent Narrows. Other than docking and rafting, I didn't motor until the last 2 miles back into Kent Narrows! Only two nights in Marinas and restaurants for dinner three nights. Most of the storms missed us. Great trip. I hope someone will take the time to write up a tale for our reading pleasure. Thank you, Larry for your San Juan report. Maybe someday Busca will return to the scene for some more sailing up there. I'm planning on adding one to my web page (with some photos of scenery and chart excerpts) in case anyone would like to get a further idea of what it is like up there. I too had a fine time although I stayed in no marinas and ate in no restaurants. The weather was exceptionally cooperative as well: rain one evening after I was in for the night and a half-day of rain the last day there. Otherwise sunny blue skies. When I returned to the Little Current marina I found that a Nor'Sea 27 had been launched. Bob probably remembers building her. Her home port is in New Jersey and the owner bought her new in '83. I didn't quite get her name, but it's J. __hawsingham from _ollingswood, NJ. Now that I look again at the photo, I could kick myself for not taking the owner up on his offer to get a closer look at her because I see she is an aft COCKPIT model instead of the more common aft CABIN model. I haven't been aboard an aft cabin model yet. I was a ways away and didn't notice that she was an aft cockpit model. Rats!: http://www.bright.net/~htmills/NorSea27.jpg As an aside (commentary on the community of the boating world), he knows Anne Westlund who sails her Potter up there! I believe "Evergreen" that sails out of Lake Macatawa (adjoining Lake Michigan) in Holland, MI is an aft-cockpit version . . . Beautiful boat. Personally, think the aft-cockpit versions are prettier, though I'm sure the aft-cabin versions are more practical. ----- Original Message ----- From: <htmills@bright.net> To: "'For and about Montgomery Sailboats'" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Monday, June 21, 2004 8:46 PM Subject: trip reports....and Nor'Sea 27 Sighting I hope someone will take the time to write up a tale for our reading pleasure. Hi Tod..! Great photos, thank you. I do remember that aft cockpit Nor'Sea 27 I built in 1983....the only reason I remember it, is the "kelly" green stripe they ordered. It still has that special look after 21 years. :-) Just finished another set of M_15 and M_17 that are available. No waiting. Fair winds, Bob htmills@bright.net wrote:
