the last time changing from the email system to a forum was discussed, about three or four years ago, it was resoundly 'voted down' by the group members. folks found forums to be difficult and/or not wanting to learn a new system. the other concern was loosing the email list members in the transition to a new location. currently there is - * email list (limited photo abilities and no ability to search old posts) * facebook page (lots of folks don't want facebook because of personal date being public and/or 'mined' by facebook) * trailersailor sub-forum (can post pictures, though photos are deleted after a few years) * MSOG - old info in www-pages and how one can join/remove self from email list. no updates to old info currently planned. * MSOGphoto - old info in www-pages. in process of being updated (yes, slowly) and will be available for user-submitted photos and m-boat project reports. future - * do we want to go to facebook? * do we want to go to a forum (i can host forum space and create a moderator system that i, as a builder, does control)? * yahoo group? * stay with what we have (see 'currently' above)? let us share opinions. -- :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com
It would be great to move to a more central kind of thing, the big barrier is hosting space and responsibility. If you're willing to take moderator and provide a space that includes the ability to post pics, video, etc. I'm all for that. Facebook would be the easiest, but I'm not a huge fan of their ownership policies. Forum would be the best in my opinion, as long as I can continue to get email updates! I for one don't do FB. TOS not acceptable to me. Yahoo groups (and some open source forum software too) gives the choice of getting e-mails, reading the threads forum-style on the group pages, or both. So no need to choose one or the other (because most groups will split between "I hate forums, love e-mail" and "I hate e-mail, love forums"). Main advantage is it's free and if everyone behaves, no moderator needed. Someone has to create the group but that's about it. For anything else, someone has to admin it at least somewhat. I can easily host something snazzy and new on my server, and, need at least a little something annually for hosting resources plus there's install, configure, keep up to date the software, vs. security issues so that it doesn't get hacked and turned into a link farm or spammer site. cheers, John S. Some things to consider... Read the privacy statements and check how much personal data must be provided to subscribe and how much is collected on an ongoing basis. How much are you willing to share? Not an issue if you're a Facebook user since you've already given it all away. A little research will reveal that our host ISP,xmission, is a strong advocate for its users and has fought hard against government and corporate intrusion. https://xmission.com/privacy-pledge Check who owns the content. Not always who you think. What's the long term stability of the service and the administrator? This list has been puttering along for almost 20 years now without a hiccup. And finally, a list usage comment - While far from convenient, any member can go to the archives and download almost the whole shebang, currently 317 MB, and search locally. There are some very old archives not included in that file that are available in the FTP area, also reached through the URL below. https://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats Keith Diehl

Awesome! Just checked out the Sage Marine forum and it looks good. Good on you, Dave! I'd be interested in moving to something more like that. I'd be excited to see some division of conversation between M15, 17 and 23s. Hearing about the 17s and 23s just makes me jealous! :P It'd also be fantastic to have the 'sage' advice of all the salt that frequents this list organized in a more easily accessible way. Sounds like almost everyone who has contributed to this conversation is all for moving. However, there are a great many more of us out there that haven't been heard from. Maybe because we are happy with what we have. I, for one, do not like the forum / sub forum type of list. Divide a group into pieces and you lose the group. There are already other Montgomery sites out there, with the Trailer Sailor group, the Facebook group, and even the one on the Sage site... and for the most part you have different people in each group. We are already getting splintered into factions. Dividing us further, by boat size, topic, etc. might serve those who are only interested in a special topic for the moment, but in my opinion does not serve us well as a body of sailors. Yes, I've been called a dinosaur before, because I prefer to stay with things that work and the simpler the better. That is also why I sail a Montgomery. Yes, I've been called a dinosaur before, because I prefer to stay with things that work and the simpler the better. That is also why I sail a Montgomery. I can add moderators to the Mboat section. Create new subforums (ie, for each boat type). The software will host photos and document attachments (videos are still best done on YouTube and linked to a post in the
forum).
A moderator system would be good so if there is a problem with a
post/user
a group can make decisions instead of an individual (I've done such a thing with forums I've moderated for 10+ years).

For an example of a fairly well conceived, well run sailboat marque enthusiasts' forum check out the main area of the Cape Dory forum. http://capedory.org/board/viewforum.php?f=10 It has four subforums (there are more in other areas but most of them would not concern us). We could get by with only two: general discussion and classifieds. Whether to break out things like photos, projects, and cruise/race/social event announcements and reports is just a matter of consensus. Speaking of classifieds, no one has mentioned it yet, but that feature alone could justify the move to a forum format (yes, I've seen the classifieds on the MSOG site). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Buzzi" <thomaspbuzzi@gmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, January 28, 2016 1:42:25 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: forum or email Surprising! <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail> This email has been sent from a virus-free computer protected by Avast. www.avast.com <https://www.avast.com/sig-email?utm_medium=email&utm_source=link&utm_campaign=sig-email&utm_content=webmail> <#DDB4FAA8-2DD7-40BB-A1B8-4E2AA1F9FDF2> On Thu, Jan 28, 2016 at 12:35 PM, Keith Diehl <kdiehl@xmission.com> wrote:

Yes, and I suspect you will lose a large percentage if you make a change to Facebook or an online forum. On Thu, Jan 28, 2016 at 10:35 AM, Keith Diehl <kdiehl@xmission.com> wrote:

I have used several that are based on the vBulletin forum software and really like it. It is used by the majority of hobbyist forums for cars, boats, etc. and it's very easy to use. As a relatively recent montgomery owner, I often am looking for advice on how to do things that have already been covered in detail on this list before I joined, but I have no easy way to find them. People often put significant time into writing instructional e-mails which are almost immediately lost. For example, when someone takes time to do a write-up such as how to add reef point hardware, it should be quick and easy to access forever from a list of all such write-ups. vBulletin allows this, as one can have a sub-forum for such posts, and then have a "sticky" post at the top that serves as a "Table of Contents." This way we could gradually build a set of instructions and information, that easy for everyone to search, view, and contribute to. As an example, in a recent e-mail to the list I posted a link to my review on towing my M15 with a VW Golf. As this is posted on the TDIclub vBulletin forum, anyone in the future looking to do something similar will immediately find it. Tyler

currently there is -
* email list (limited photo abilities and no ability to search old posts) * facebook page (lots of folks don't want facebook because of personal date being public and/or 'mined' by facebook) * trailersailor sub-forum (can post pictures, though photos are deleted after a few years) * MSOG - old info in www-pages and how one can join/remove self from email list. no updates to old info currently planned. * MSOGphoto - old info in www-pages. in process of being updated (yes, slowly) and will be available for user-submitted photos and m-boat project reports.
future -
* do we want to go to facebook? * do we want to go to a forum (i can host forum space and create a moderator system that i, as a builder, does control)? * yahoo group? * stay with what we have (see 'currently' above)?

Hello all, I being a new member here didn't want to suggest it because I understand changing is difficult. But since it's up for discussion, yahoo is old and clunky compared to the forum interfaces that are available now. Add a pic by clicking a button. Ad a link..same thing...very much like a word processor. Listservers were created when the web was inly text based and do not take full advantage of the now common graphical interfaces. If you guys think it might be worth doing, I'll look into what it would take. Meanwhile...ya'll think about who wants to babysit it...that's the thing! I’m new here but have been through the wars elsewhere. The best thing about something like Yahoo Groups is that you can spread responsibility around. Have a moderator and an alternate and a backup moderator or two. If the guy in charge gets busy, gets sick, goes on vacation, things don’t come to a halt. If you burn out, get someone else to take over. There are good reasons NOT to own the domain or the site or the software you use. If you’re paying for domain registration or hosting or such, you’ve made yourself indispensable and you never get a day off. I haven’t used Yahoo in a while so won’t specifically recommend it. Facebook, of course, is unholy.
Put me down as a forumite. Over the last 20 years I have participated to a greater or lesser degree in at least 10 different car or boat enthusiast forums and feel the forum format is clearly superior to any of the alternatives. Very simple to use, software addresses security issues, don't care if my posts are turned over to the black helicopter people, number of subforums is a mere detail. I also welcome Sage's offer to host, but wonder whether a more independent forum might not get a better response. To cite the most obvious example, I would like a forum where everyone who manufactures Montgomerys or Montgomery-like boats still feels welcome to participate, at least on a noncommercial basis. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Scobie" <scoobscobie@gmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2016 5:54:45 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: forum or email the last time changing from the email system to a forum was discussed, about three or four years ago, it was resoundly 'voted down' by the group members. folks found forums to be difficult and/or not wanting to learn a new system. the other concern was loosing the email list members in the transition to a new location. currently there is - * email list (limited photo abilities and no ability to search old posts) * facebook page (lots of folks don't want facebook because of personal date being public and/or 'mined' by facebook) * trailersailor sub-forum (can post pictures, though photos are deleted after a few years) * MSOG - old info in www-pages and how one can join/remove self from email list. no updates to old info currently planned.
