Looking to get back into sailing, ironically I just unloaded 4 years ago to family a Precision 21 which I bought in 2001 and restored and the story was published early in SCA. I am an experienced sailor having sailed and owned a Prindle 16, Laser 28 and too many windsurfers as well my old P21. I think I am going to buy a new Monty 15 cause you can't find a used one anywhere here out East. Anybody want to sell one to me. Anyway I like sailing with my wife and I like the ease of storage and trailer ability. Can anybody share with me your heavy wind and seas sailing experiences as my port of sailing will be the Chesapeake Bay. Thanks Smiley magoo252@comcast.net
Smiley and Karen..... Welcome.....I hope you get a new one. (of course) I have a double load going EAST and could make it a Triple load (like Joe Murphy's SeaFrog) for you. Nice talking to you. Bob Eeg www.montgomeryboats.com www.norseayachts.com (949) 489-8227

Where are you, Smiley? I know there's a M-15 at the Solomon's Rec Annex, but I've no idea if it's for sale (it is not marked as such). John Tyner '88 M-15 #412 "Chimpanzee" On 3/2/2011 7:16 PM, Karen and Smiley wrote:

the M15 really 'hauls the mail' in wind between 8-12 kts with full main and 110 jib. with two people on-boat you can really go fast with correct use of weight placement (ie, movable ballast). the M15 isn't slow in light winds. her light weight means you can out-sail many larger boats because she has a good amount of sq. ft. in her sail plan. i made it a habit of 'out sailing' any boat up to 10'-15' longer in light air. above 12ish knots you want to reef the main. above 18ish knots a second reef. around 20ish knots a smaller jib is in order. she is a three-stay rig and you must have a main and jib set to sail well. she doesn't go to weather at all well with just the jib or just the main ... you need both. you also need to keep tension on the main sheet as this keeps the jib shape correct. this is why you need to reef. if you release the main sheet tension you 'bag' the jib's shape (along the luff) and can heal more ... a LOT more. keep the main sheet tension (ie, this is your rear-stay) and 'luff up' a bit and/or only let the main out enough to back wind the main's luff. in a seaway the M15 is dry and comfortable (i've only gotten wet on an M-boat when motoring into a sea). you can store an amazing amount of stuff on an M15 ... actually too much and overweight the boat. the cabin is good for sleeping - the v-berth is more comforatable and larger than the M17's. is you set on the porta-potti you _almost_ have sitting headroom. think of the M15's cabin as a fiberglass tent for sleeping and storage and you have the correct attitude about how to cruise on the boat. i cruised for up to two weeks on my M15. she is seaworthy and a boat that inspires confidence. she is also a 'looker' that means everyone walking/sailing by will ask about the boat and want to talk. please check out my old M15's www-site - http://www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner :: M17 #375 - SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.us --- On Wed, 3/2/11, Karen and Smiley <magoo252@comcast.net> wrote: Looking to get back into sailing, ironically I just unloaded 4 years ago to family a Precision 21 which I bought in 2001 and restored and the story was published early in SCA. Hi Smiley, I am placing my two year old M15 up for sale due to health reasons. I am in Durham, North Carolina. Email me directly at boats@meridianleeward.com if you're interested, and I'll send you a phone number to call me. Jim on 3/2/11 7:16 PM, Karen and Smiley at magoo252@comcast.net wrote:

Hi Smiley, the M-15's do come up around the Bay but not often. I found one near Port Tabacco MD and missed one that had been advertised in Alexandria. I went to MA to buy my M-17 and just got an M-23 used in CA (closer to SF Bay in that case). I would never discourage anyone from buying new but used are available now and then and if you are willing to travel or get it shipped (I used U-ship for the CA boat) then it can work out. I would never want to talk you into a bigger boat but you might want to consider the M-17. I sailed the M-15 around the Bay bridge out of Sandy Point but mostly around the Bay down by Chesapeake Beach. I did not have her out in too strong of wind, my issue was usually lack of wind on the Bay, but I had my M-17 out in lots of small craft advisories and she loved it. I have only sailed a Zuma and a Compac 16 before the M boats but the Montgomery's seem very well behaved and very forgiving. They are very stable boats and most important to me sail really well on all points and go fast. For the Bay my only recommendation would be to definitely get a 150% which I used as my standard head sail unless things were really piping up. But you probably know all that. I sail out of Breezy Point near Chesapeake Beach MD, once I have the M-23 re-assembled! Hope to see you out on the Bay or would love to see if we could go out for a spin on the M-23 if that works for you. Robbin M-23 and M-10 On 3/2/2011 7:16 PM, Karen and Smiley wrote:

Hi Smiley, Hope to see on the CB this summer!! In the past we have had a yearly CB Cruise of M-boaters. Unfortunately, we lost our Cruise Director Julie (a.k.a. Doug Kelch 'Seas the Day') He's out west now sailing his Gaff Rig. I have sailed with Robbin and Bill and agree with everything previously mentioned. Bill is absolutely correct about the shallows of the CB. I was crossing the bay a few years ago during some heavy seas (2+ ft swells) and thought I was safe enough in deep water since I was far from shore. Unfortunately, I did not realize I was smack in the middle of Love Point. A swell picked me up and dropped me straight down on the bottom and both my swing keel and rudder hit hard. The keel slammed into the trunk and the rudder shot out of the grundeons. I lost control of the boat. I released the main sheet and reached for the tiller. Fortunately, my tiller tamer was tied off to the tiller, which kept it from ending up in the drink. Do you know how hard it is to reset the rudder into those small grundeons while riding 2+ ft swells? Exciting stuff!!!! So, .my 02 cents worth would be to get a good set of charts, study the well and stay away from skinny water. If you are looking for an M-17, definitely consider an Ida Sailor kick up rudder. On the CB you will need it. Let me know when you have your boat and maybe we can meet up and have a trial sail together. Good luck with your search. I agree with everything Dave Scobie said about the M15. One more goodie, especially for the Chesapeake, with it's murky water, soft bottom and shallows, is that both centerboard and rudder kick up.
