Connie as usual that was a very informative and excellent post. I have owned two sailboats and two kayaks. While I have done a lot of scrapping, sanding, cleaning, painting, oiling and waxing I have never built a boat. Tick tick tick. If I ever expect to build one I need to start soon. I know I can not top Bob and Jerry and I expect that I can not come close to Howard. Actually I was attempting to have a bit of humor at my wife's expense, as she is the one who asked the question regarding buy vs. build. She has met Howard and a few members of the Havasu local. I have dragged her onto boats from one coast to the other. She always marvels at how nice sailboat people are in general and Montgomery people in particular. I wish she could meet you because I am sure you would bowl her over. steve Steve R. M-15 #119 Lexington, KY

Hi Steve, Building a boat is one of he most satisfying things you can do. Building a house is the ultimate ego trip, but that takes far more time and money than building a small boat. Aside from model boats, my first small boat building experience was when I bought a kit for an OPTIMIST dinghy, and built it for my children (2), assuming that one could sail the 9' round bottom dinghy, while the other could sail the OPTIMIST. Hah.... that's what I thought.... The cry from the children was, I want to sail the faster one.... So, the next winter, I ordered another OPTIMIST kit and built a second one. Then us "old folks" could sail the dinghy, while the children had fun sailing their own boats. Much later I built a Bolger CARTOPPER, then the Bolger NYMPH. You start such a building job, and you learn as you go.... There are lots of good "How-To" instruction books that make the process fairly straightforward, assuming that you have a few woodworking tools a patient wife, and a living room that can be used for boat building. (Explain to her before you start the project, that boat building results in some sawdust, and plane shavings, but that the end result - a beautiful boat - is worth the slight mess you will cause.) Good luck and enjoy the process. Connie
